Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Dobson.
Hi Patrick, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always loved the arts, whether it was dancing, drawing, or acting.
In 1996, my mother signed me up for a workshop at Born Again Church here in Nashville, and out of all the things they were offering the one that stuck out to me was the mime workshop which was taught by K and K mime. So I jumped in learned the choreography from the teachers then found out I wasn’t allowed to do it because I was too young.
I was upset but didn’t let it get to me, but that next week, I was listening to songs and it was like I could visualize in my mind movements that matched the words. So, I signed up for the Church Anniversary kids talent night later that year, and 28 years later I’m still going strong in the art of mime.
I have been blessed to open up for and work with some incredible artists throughout the years, but honestly, my favorite part of what I do is being able to work with the youth and contribute to showing positive avenues to express whatever is going on in life through the arts instead of negative alternatives.
My business Without A Word is a reflection of all my talents the drawing, the dance, the mime is all done without me having to say anything, my work speaks for itself.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been easy in the beginning I was not allowed to even perform in a lot of churches due to it being seen as a form of witchcraft among other things. It’s wild because now it’s everywhere, even the places that turned me away. I think that’s a thing that happens anyway when new stuff comes along, especially when you mix religion with business or anything that could seem a distraction from the purpose or message being taught.
I’ve had some bad management experiences that taught me valuable lessons about budgeting as well as knowing your value as an artist or performer. I’ve lost a few young people whom I once taught which is always tough because you build bonds with them and watch them grow wanting them to succeed then boom, life just throws a curveball.
I don’t just mime to gospel music even though that’s what I started in, I do all genres of music and even spoken word sets, and that can sometimes raise a few eyebrows, but I never do anything that would compromise who I am as a man, my beliefs, or my brand.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a mime, I’m an actor the music is the script and I tell the story through my body, mostly hands and facial expressions.
What separates me from most mimes in my field is the fact that I do all genres of music, which you don’t see at all. I’m proud to be still able to perform and see people touched emotionally by what I do. Out of all my talents under the Without A Word brand, the miming is the foundation of it all.
