Raggo Zulu Nation LTD is a London-based, independent record label, with deep Afrocentric roots.

It comes from a vision that has at the heart of it, the necessity for a fairer and more inclusive community amongst artists who deserve a chance to exercise their freedom of expression through music, poetry, art, and fashion. It is an independent, self-sufficient running business.

We like to keep it raw, homegrown & home-cooked. From records to live music, from documentaries to workshops, from development to simple advice, we are here to serve the community and empower young people.

RNZRecords comes from the joint effort of artists Marianna Zappi & Raggo Zulu Rebel, both musicians with a lengthy musical careers and both very willing and keen to leave a legacy behind for the new generations of upcoming artists.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Like any new business, it’s been a difficult road. We didn’t have any idea of what we would have to do and the lengths we would have to go to in order for us to function as a business.

We had to learn the administrative part of running the business, we had to apply for permissions, get our deals with the distribution, and at the same time ensure we would still look after our own careers, we would still be able to live a sociable life and take care of our loved ones.

We invested firsthand as business needs investment and we had to find creative ways in which we would push it forward and make our vision a reality.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Raggo & Marianna are both musical artists, both with 50+ of experience combined.

Raggo Zulu Rebel is a hip-hop artist from London. His unique blend of sounds and influences from golden era hip-hop, roots reggae, dub, Nyabinghi chanting, 140bpm grime, and other contemporary styles, make. Raggo’s sound is original, distinguished, and unique in every sense of the word.

Marianna Zappi is an Italian-born, London-adopted singer-songwriter, her voice is warm, deep, and agile to reach some great heights, not only with her range but also with her spirit. Her music is fresh and authentic like a cold winter morning breeze walking through the streets of Bedford–Stuyvesant, but the heart-full sounds of deep down Mississippi.

Both of them have a wealth of achievements under their belt but the best achievements are probably personal ones, family, and seeing all the young people who have come through our doors, do better in life. In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
This is a very good question.

Since we started 25-30 years ago we saw the industry change completely. From analog to digital, from big major companies investing millions in a limited amount of artists to artists taking over the industry independently.

Hopefully, there will be a return to good taste, and a return to wanting to listen to songs and their meaning. We would want to think that the streaming world will finally have learned about the importance of paying songwriters, the value, and the hard work that it takes to compose a piece of music.

Ultimately we would want to see a better environment, less toxic or cutthroat for upcoming artists, an environment where everyone can get a chance to express themselves freely. Music is supposed to unite, there is so much division in the world as it is.
