Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Correia.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in the New England film scene and was lucky enough to frequent the open mic scene at an early age and learn from some of the greatest including Livingston Taylor and Shawn Colvin. I began writing music in fourth grade as a way to express my feelings. I had learned basic piano at that point and I used it to help build a frame work around my melodies and lyrics. In the sixth grade, I learned to play guitar. I could always be found in the “music room” with other creative friends who inspired me. I followed my calling to the Hartt School of Music where I graduated in 2003 with a degree in Music Education / Vocal Emphasis. There I met some of my dearest musical friends, including Javier Colon, who open the door for me to Nashville many years ago.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Music and the arts can be an extremely challenging, yet rewarding path. For many of us, the craft chooses us. I was fortunate to know at an early age that music would define my journey. I could never have dreamed of the experiences I’ve had today looking back at that little girl from Rochester, MA, who decided to follow her dreams many years ago.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve performed venues and events throughout the country and I’ve built integral relationships within the industry including Keb Mo, Mike Wolfe & Beth Nielsen Chapman. At one point, I was averaging 110 shows per summer. I have written 500 songs since the age of 9 and I do an average of 150 shows per year. I recently released a new EP titled “Flying,” which was an intimate portrait of my trials and tribulations, my heart, and my soul. Along with that EP, late last year, I also collaborated with Lillie Mae on “Rose Colored Glasses,” and Shy Carter on a rendition of “Speak to a Girl.”
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am an avid long-distance runner and grew up riding horses at my family’s farm in Rochester, MA.
