Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Merrill Hall
Hi Sarah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
During my senior year of college, I started a Twitter account called @bigkidproblems to procrastinate from studying. I started making little jokes about not wanting to join the real world and feeling more like a “big kid” instead of an adult and it quickly started gaining popularity around my college campus. After I graduated, I moved to NYC and started turning my tweets into memes on Instagram. Huge accounts like @thefatjewish and @betches started reposting me and I started gaining a large following! That was over ten years ago and since then, the jokes have evolved with me, climbing the corporate ladder, dating horror stories, making lots of mistakes, getting married, and now, even having little kids of my own! The account has led to opportunities I never thought possible, TV appearances on The Steve Harvey Show, leaving my corporate job to work for myself, starting two successful podcasts, hosting events and more!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. I’ve had plenty of bumps along the way, especially when it came to running my own business. In corporate life, I had a guaranteed paycheck. When I started working for myself, slow weeks and months were terrifying! I had to learn to take advantage of numerous revenue streams and always have a pipeline of projects and income in the works. It something I still struggle with!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I basically write jokes for the internet. I love to make fun of all the daily little issues that affect so many of us as we grow up and move into adult life. I love knowing that they make about 500,000 people crack a smile every day. There is so much negative stuff on our social media feeds and I try to be a place that is relatable and pure fun.
About 5 years ago I started taking my favorite “Big Kid Problems” and turning them into a Podcast. I would bring on experts, celebs, comedians etc to talk about their own big kid problems and share some helpful insight. Podcasting has been what I’m most proud of. When I got pregnant two years ago I started a weekly pregnancy podcast called “Bottle Service” to talk about all the crazy parts of pregnancy that no one tells you about and offer some laughs and insights along the way. I have been blown away by the response, and I now hear from pregnant women all over the world who listen to and have been helped by the show. I even get pictures of ‘Bottle Service Babies’ being born every week! it brings me so much joy and fulfillment to help other women going through a very vulnerable time in their lives. I never would have expected this to come out of a twitter account I started in college.

What does success mean to you?
Success to me is having freedom. I love being able to work when and where I want to and not having to wake up at 7am and head to an office every day. I take my toddler to the park on a Tuesday, I get to go to the midday workout classes that are half empty. I can travel without having to worry about PTO. Thats success to me!
