Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheena Brook.
Hi Sheena, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started out like a lot of artists from the south, singing in church. It’s a long story but, I struggled with my sexuality all through my teen years. I didn’t know anyone that was gay and so when I was told I needed to “fix” what was wrong with me or God wouldn’t use me, I believed them. At about 27, I was in a really dark place and I realized that I wanted to live. The only way I could keep doing that was to do it authentically. So, I came out, I lost my job, my friends, some family, and all kinds of things. It was traumatizing and also incredibly worth it.
It was a series of events from then until now that led me to where I am. I have been writing and singing and improving as an artist right alongside improving my soul and discovering who I am and who I want to be. I think that is what inspires me to write and perform. It’s also the reason I want my music and who I am to encourage and empower others to be their authentic self, no matter what anyone says about it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think sometimes I struggle with feeling like I got a late start on life, and also a late start on my career. Although, I think in the last few years the industry has changed and grown into a more accepting place. I can’t tell you how many times people have said something about me being “a little less gay” or “wow, you’re older than I thought.” I try not to let those comments bother me though.
This is part of why I started hosting songwriter shows for women and people in the LGBTQ+ community. A lot of people feel they don’t have a place to be heard. I can’t change others or the industry but I can definitely create a safe and fun place for people to showcase their talent and be free.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m probably most known as a musician and singer-songwriter. I like to be myself when I play, tell stories, sometimes make jokes, and just connect with people. I play a lot of venues in my home town and in between those dates I travel playing my own music at songwriter’s festivals, private events, and other venues. I’m proud of my entire journey. I have been able to do a lot of cool things.
I have hosted some awesome events in the last 5 years, I was on season 12 of The Voice, and I’m releasing brand new music, right now! I think what is different about me is that I don’t think we are all different. We are all after the same sense of happiness and fulfillment in our lives. It may look different for all of us but generally, I find that we all have a lot more in common than we think.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
