Check Out Slim McGraw’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Slim McGraw.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Born and raised in North Carolina with parents who loved music. First played on turntables at 15. A friend owned a pair and he would let me take them home we me something times. After graduating high school and in my first year of college I was told I had Hodgkins. I battled that through college and still graduate on time with honors. After college and beating cancer, I wanted to enjoy my life. Music and making people happy did that for me. So, after I saved up for a few years I went out and bought a really nice set of turntables and a mixer and began practicing. In the beginning, I only played vinyl records. It took years back then to build your collection of records. After a couple years of practice, I started playing in bars and clubs. Early in my DJ career I was at the right place and the right time and teamed up with maxim magazine and bud light and did a 35-city promo tour across America. I did this for a few years and it opened many doors. During that time is when I met DJ AM (RIP) and Serato DJ software came out. He introduced me to the new software that allowed you to play mp3s off control records and laced me up with a HD full of music and custom DJ edits. This allowed me not to have to haul a bunch of records around anymore and opened up more doors for me to travel with my music. Also, during this time is when I met my good friend Dee Jay Silver. Between meeting Silver and me being the 10-year resident DJ for Dale Earnhardt Jr’s Whisky River in Charlotte, NC many country music doors started to open. Over the past 7 years, I have giving DJ support to many county artist, concerts, and festivals with my unique wordplay country mixes.

Today I live in Nashville. I am still djing across America from Cali to NY djing bars, clubs, cruises, honky tonks, theaters, concerts, and festivals, etc. In Nashville, you can catch me djing at Florida Georgia Lines FGL House, Jason Aldean’s Rooftop Bar, Luke Bryan’s 32 Bridge & Miranda Lambert’s Casa Rosa.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a DJ from NC there are always your southern stereotypes. I finally just embraced it and ran with it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
DJ AM was really big on wordplay mixes with hip hop & top 40. I just carried it over to country music…

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
DJ AM & Dee Jay Silver, Bob Durkin & Brad Beltrondo who booked me at Dale Jr’s club for so many years. And who book me at a bunch of festivals and concerts. These guys got out of the nightclub biz and now run some of the biggest country festivals in America.

Also, John Kozma & Darren Knight aka Southern Momma for all the comedy shows I have DJed for them across the country…

DJ Donnie D & the TC restaurant group in Nashville, TN for all my Broadway bookings at the venues I mentioned.
