Check Out Suzy J’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzy J.

Hi Suzy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The story goes that I was singing the moment I could speak – or so my family tell me! My love for music was instant and it was infectious. I found music to be both a release and an escape. Singing is all I ever wanted to do as a career so I always knew I’d end up in this space. To me, music isn’t really something you choose but more of a calling.

I’ve been performing for decades but it’s only been recently, thanks to the pandemic and lockdown, that ironically I’ve been enjoying the most success. The time spent in lockdown gave me time to reflect on my life and the stories I wanted to tell, but more importantly, the time to write music. As a mum of two teenage boys, spare time wasn’t usually something I had in spades so I put that time to good use and wrote an album that I am truly proud of. To add to that my songwriting was also given industry praise with three songs making the top 30 in the Pop/ Country/ Ballad categories in the 2021 Australian Songwriter’s Association songwriting competition.

Move forward to now and I have released my first country-pop-inspired single called “I’ll Show You Love” which is available on all streaming platforms and getting rave reviews. My vocal stylings reflect both my pop and country influences creating a unique blend of power and sensibility. A true singer-songwriter, I believe I am a fresh face and bring a fresh sound that will resonate with people both in the USA and Australia.

Plus, I also finally made it to Nashville where I am recording some new songs that I am super excited to release later this year. I also had the opportunity to co-write with some of Music City’s acclaimed # 1 songwriters such as Danny Wells and Bryan White! Needless to say, Nashville definitely stole a piece of my heart and felt like a home away from home so you will be seeing and hearing about me more in the future that’s for sure.

Life is certainly a wonderful journey and if you have the courage to put yourself out amazing things can happen! So let my story inspire you that it is never too late to follow your dreams.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No one’s journey is ever a smooth ride – but that’s what makes it interesting right? As a songwriter, it gives us content to write about.

Living in Melbourne Australia during Covid, we certainly had more challenges than most cities around the world. We had a gruelling 262 days in lockdown whereby we were not allowed to leave our homes (with the exception only of getting food and medical supplies). So, with my songs written but stuck in lockdown, I was forced to think outside the square. I ended up connecting with talented Nashville producer Ben Reno (Majestic Ape Studios) who believed in my music and me as an artist and tirelessly helped bring my songs to life. I had always wanted to go to Nashville so this was literally the next best thing.

Ben recorded my songs with the help of some of Nashville’s finest musicians who have played for Taylor Swift and Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood etc which was a real thrill. Whenever Aussie lockdown restrictions lifted, I would then record my vocals at a Melbourne studio and sent them back to Nashville for mixing and mastering. Sometimes I found myself recording a few tracks in a day just in case I never got back to the studio for a while!

To think that my music was made with the help of people on the other side of the world and I barely left my home in Australia is a pretty wild thought! It was a truly amazing experience though and it was my silver lining to the whole pandemic.

So when faced with adversity, it just goes to show how technology, lateral thinking and a positive attitude can make dreams come true.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a country pop singer-songwriter from Australia.

Being from Melbourne, I grew up listening to mainly pop and rock, but have recently I have fallen in love with country music and the way their songs really tell a story.

As I’ve developed my songwriting, I have tried to capture the best of both worlds and create catchy songs with a real heart and soul.

My pop vocals combined with country-inspired instrumentation is a fresh and different sound that I hope will have worldwide appeal.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
My current single “I’ll Show You Love” is streaming everywhere on all major platforms (Spotify, iTunes, apple music etc) and I have my official music video out on Youtube. You can also follow me on Instagram @suzyjmusic

I will be releasing more songs in the coming months and I cannot wait to share them with everyone! This is just the start of what I hope to be a long career and relationship with Nashville.

I have fallen in love with Nashville during my recent stay and I will be coming back again later this year. So for all you Nashville natives, keep an eye out for upcoming performance dates and I look forward to seeing you all soon!
