Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanner Usrey.

Hi Tanner, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to introduce yourself.
I’m from Prosper, TX, and I grew up singing from a young age. Then I started to learn how to play the guitar and soon fell in love with the storytelling a song can provide. I’ve grown into this more soulful, American-rock sound, and it’s ramped up when you see a live show! One night I was watching some TV; after I released some singles and the Medicine Man EP, I got an email I did not recognize. It was the folks at Paramount Network asking to play ‘The Light’ on their show Yellowstone. I fell out of my damn chair! If you’re a fan, it premiered this year (2022) on the show’s season finale. It was during a scene where they argued if beans are going in chili. For the record, they 100% do.

I put out the SOL Sessions EP in 2021, and that was a fun one that made me dig in as a performer and storyteller. We just released two new ones this year (2022), ‘Take Me Home,’ which I believe is a testament to my growth as a musician and storyteller. The song is my fastest-growing single to date, with over 4+ million streams since its release in late August, and I just passed 1 Million Monthly Listeners on Spotify, which I don’t think I’ve fully come to terms with because that number is just so mind-blowing. Nov 11th we released ‘Pick Up Your Phone’ which is a very heavy and deeply emotional song but honestly, it’s one of my favorites. We also launched a cool idea of picking up your phone and really talking to someone so people can text me at (214) 949-1167 and yes…it’s really me and I try to respond to everyone but yeah, the song is about a personal experience and learning that if you didn’t pick up the phone to talk to someone and they weren’t on the other line, how badly would that hurt. I’ve toured all over the country this year and have played with some talented musicians that I now can call my friends. To me, it’s always been about storytelling. I’ve always had a lot to say, and I’m so glad people have been willing to listen.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh man, it’s never smooth! Broken down vehicles, getting pulled over late at night, early morning travel, and hardly any sleep really begins to take its toll. I’ve always had to fight for my place, and I don’t mind that. The challenge is worth it, and so far, it’s paid off. I remember working nights from my old 9 to 5, wondering if I could play music to support myself. The minute I took a chance on myself and decided to quit that job cold turkey, it’s never been smooth, but it’s been an adventure that I continue to go on every day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
To date, I’m most proud of the community we’ve built. I see fans at multiple shows, which is nuts because I know gas isn’t cheap! But it’s the love and support felt every night on stage, kind messages over social media from people who have become my biggest supporters, and the ability to give back and do more for those who have changed my life. None of what I do is even remotely possible without the family of people who believe in me.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I learned how easily things could be taken away from you. My world was quite literally ground to a halt. There is no proper way to describe the feeling of not being able to tour and then finally being able to go out and play every night. I’m always smiling on stage because I got my life back. Simple as that.
