Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Duff.
Hi Troy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is best described in my bio, which can find on my website www.troyduffart.com; but a short version is I was born and raised in the Nashville 12South neighborhood, where I was introduced to the graffiti scene in high school. After graduating, I moved west to California to start college and find my voice. This is where I was able to soak up the graffiti culture and develop my style. After several years in Los Angeles and working in TV and Film as well as designing for high-end boutiques and celebrities, I returned home to Nashville in 2007 and have been carrying on my visual journey.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not a smooth road b/c graffiti art is looked at as vandalism and has such a negative connotation. So immediately after saying the word, when talking through a job for a potential client, it scares them (lol); but also realizing that this gritty art form is not for everybody.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Artist / Designer, Specializing in Commissioned Graffiti Art. Known for authentic text graffiti style w/ eye-popping color pallets/blends and graphical fills, as well as a style of repetitive geometric graphics that is my language known as Calligraffiti. Most proud of my dedication to the penmanship of the graffiti culture for over 30 years and to have 5 permanent graffiti pieces (located in the Hip Hop Gallery) in the new Nation Museum of African American Music here in Nashville. What sets me apart would be my attention to detail and the cleanliness yet interesting fills in my pieces.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for the newcomers is to stay dedicated to your vision and follow that firstly, and the magic will develop and follow over time. There is not something I wish I knew per say; however, I have often thought if I could have the things now that we’re not available then, such as different tip sizes, low-pressure paint as opposed to med or high pressure, etc.
Pricing:
- Majority of my pieces range in price depending on different details re/ each piece.
