Check Out Tyler Bishop’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Bishop.

Tyler, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m from a small town in Arkansas! I started doing prom hair and makeup out of my parent’s house when I was 14 and fell in love with transforming how I made people feel. I went to college because that’s what I was supposed to do, and hated it.

I started cosmetology school my last semester of college and hit the road after that. I moved to Destin, FL (2014), where I met my mentor and found my passion for hair – blonding transformations. Being behind the chair wasn’t enough for me and so I traveled to New York and did fashion week and found my second passion- set and stage hair. Soon after (2017), that I moved to Nashville, and this has been my home ever since.

I have created my dream job of working behind the chair three days a week and the rest of the time creating hair for the red carpet, TV sets, music videos, and PR events for high-profile clients.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This is a great question! It has been anything BUT an easy Road. Where I’m from people think you can’t live off of a hairstylist’s salary. I set out to prove them wrong, and I moved to Destin with 500 dollars in my pocket, nowhere to stay, and nowhere to work. I got a 40 hours a week job at Olive Garden and continued to interview at the top salon there until they hired me.

From there I lived with a fry cook from the kitchen, and work 40 hours a week at both places until I graduated from their year-long assistant program. I was determined not to work at Olive Garden, so I opted to work 8 am-9 pm my first year at the salon seven days a week to build my clientele. After successfully doing that, I decided to move to Nashville and start all over. I moved here with one month’s rent, and a moving truck full of dreams. I started at a salon off the west end and worked there during the day and worked (again) at Olive Garden at night, which supplemented the income I wasn’t making. I worked tirelessly on Instagram and social media to create a presence so my work would be seen by potential clients. A lot of my work for the first year was free just so I could get people in my chair. I’ve been here for 4 years now, and I’m just now seeing the fruits of my labor – but still on the grind!

There are so many beautifully talented stylists in Nashville and the surrounding areas so it’s hard to get your craft noticed in a massive pool of established, creative, amazing people! But sticking to your goal and continuing to climb hurdles made it possible for me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m kind of a double-edged sword! On-sets and red carpets, I do a lot of styling and glam hair. I’m most known for Brittany Aldean’s BIG CHOP. She’s always had long blonde hair and I went to her house and we chopped off about a foot or more of hair, and it shut Instagram down.

She really helped me excel in my career. I’m also known for losing tousled (but big) blowout styles that I do on Jessie James Decker for events and Kittenish Shoots. On-set I do a lot of high pony’s, extensions, and big sexy hair! Behind the chair, I’m known for transforming clients from brunette to blonde in one session, big chops/transformations, going short to long with extensions in one session, and transforming broken fragile hair into beautiful healthy hair – all while maintaining their blonde.

Behind the chair, I specialize in creating healthy bright blondes with sexy tousled lived hair.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
YES! They’re at so much more of an advantage than I was. There are so many amazing programs at salons out there that I didn’t have. Take a TON of classes whether they’re online or hands-on. Ask tons of questions. This sounds cheesy but no question is stupid or off-limits.

You don’t know what you don’t know. Step outside your comfort zone- it’s the only place you grow! By the time you get out of school, know what you want to specialize in, start researching the salon the puts that out or the stylists that puts that out. Apply to assist them whether it be set hair or behind the chair. Do it for free if you have to. The hands-on and behind-the-scenes knowledge pays in dividends.

I’ve had to learn it all by trial and error. Don’t get in a hurry! It may be two years of your life that you pay for in time but it provides you a career you’re so passionate about the rest of your life.
