Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Boone.
Hi Tyler, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been an artist first…being a musician is how I started my journey into all my endeavors. I grew up in Charleston, SC & started playing in bands all through high school. Eventually, in college I started touring and after graduation I moved to Nashville in 2015 to keep exploring my music career. I eventually was offered a huge music management deal (that I turned down) but this led to me starting my “Homegrown” Boone’s Bourbon brand. This possible “management deal” was sparking so much buzz in the industry that eventually my friend’s Father reached out with the idea of starting a spirit brand with my name attached to it. I was all in.
Years later in 2018, I finally launched our Boone’s Bourbon brand in my hometown of Charleston, SC with the renowned Striped Pig Distillery. Fast forward to 2021, we are now in 24 states due to my extensive touring schedule and with international awards being named a “Top 6 Bourbon in the World” in Forbes magazine. This journey has been all bootstrapped from both my music career and my Father Michael Boone, now making this a Father & Son business.
The Boone’s Bourbon for the first time ever is now also accepting investors, we are extremely excited.
My other venture is a music services record label titled “Artist Formula” in which we work with artists all over the world and have been doing so since 2017. We are also now official vendors to some of the major labels and many indie labels. The company was born out of necessity to offer artists real digital services within Spotify, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok while also offering Music Distribution & Label Advances. The idea came while I was on the management team for southern-rock heroes “Drivin N Cryin” in 2017 as our biggest issue was their online presence.
Recently I relocated to Los Angeles at the end of 2019 right before the pandemic. 2020 and 2021 have been some real serious growth years for both my personally as an artist and a business owner. I wouldn’t trade any of those times for anything in the world. I believe if your back is up against the wall, you are forced to figure out how to grow and move right through whatever is holding you. I love being a recording artist and I love being an entrepreneur. I’m a fully independent artist with over 10 million streams so far…I think that’s a win.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Any successful person can tell you, it’s not an easy road and along the way and you’ll soon realize to keep your inner circle small and tight.
I’ve had failing relationships, times where I was living off credit cards just to pay rent, to business deals falling through left & right with “possible” business partners hustling us for our profits. My 1st record deal was horrible but I learned from it.
You learn to keep your head down, your blinders on and to start saying less.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have been a fully independent recording artist since I was 20 years old. I started making demos and soon actual real records in professional recording studios when I was super young. I had an incredible opportunity to help manage a world-class recording studio “Ocean Industries” (now called Big Animal Studios) from 2011 to 2018. The studio was founded and still owned by Eric Bass of Shinedown, one of the biggest acts in rock music today.
I learned a lot and the biggest thing I took from all of it during that time was to constantly invest in myself. Being young, playing shows and touring it’s such an amazing time but you can get caught up in it. Years go by and if you have no solid songs with actual production behind them, you honestly don’t have anything to prove yourself to music lovers, new fans and most importantly people in the music industry you are trying to work or just connect with.
I’ve been lucky enough to support such artists as Grammy award-winning artist Sheryl Crow, The Avett Brothers, Sublime with Rome, Christopher Cross, Hootie and the Blowfish, Old Crow Medicine Show, & others such as The Silversun Pickups, Robert Randolph, Will Hoge, Canadian songwriter Donovan Woods, Platinum-selling artist Edwin McCain, Zach Myers of Shinedown, The Revivalists, The Marcus King Band, Sean McConnell, Dr. John, Rayland Baxter, JD McPherson, Drive By Truckers & also American Idol Winners David Cook & Lee DeWyze, just to name a few.
Every record I’ve released is a fully independent release and at this point in my career, I have over 10 million streams all from my efforts due to my record label & artist services company Artist Formula. I’ve even hit the bottom of some radio charts throughout the years with even my single “Short Skirt, Bare Knees” being considered in the rock category in 2017 for a nomination with the Recording Academy.
I’ve always been a guitar player first that eventually learned how to sing and start writing songs. I’m never going to stop making music and can’t wait to see where I land when I’m 40, 50, 60 and so on…I love it.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My mentor in the beginning was first and foremost my guitar teacher from when I was 14 to 18 years old. Tom Mingoia was an incredible teacher and an incredible friend to not just me but to about every kid in the Charleston area.
After that, my mentors became my producers to then eventually other musicians who were in more successful bands.
My advice is find someone who is humble. They don’t have to be in the same industry but someone who has built a brand, toured, made a record but overall a great person. We now live in the digital world…you can reach out via Instagram, Facebook, etc…I love it when someone reaches out to me and always try to respond.
