Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Larson.
Hi Tyler, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My obsession began when I was 12—hearing “Cliffs of Dover” and “Eruption” back-to-back completely blew my mind, and I was hooked on figuring out what was making that noise. I’d soon learn it was an electric guitar, and I was off.
I kind of just jammed with kids in middle school, then got a bit more disciplined and spent high school learning bluesy pentatonic riffs inspired by Hendrix, Satriani, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC. I’d rock out with friends or in my bedroom to records.
That passion led me to Berklee College of Music, where I graduated in 2011 with a BA in Professional Music.
After a few years gigging, teaching guitar, and even working at Apple while learning to film random events and commercials for local businesses, I launched Music Is Win in 2015—a site and YouTube channel combining guitar education with comedic skits and gear reviews. The tagline “Guitar players will get it” has been the guiding light for all the content I make.
Fast-forward to today, I release content across social media daily where I have millions of subscribers. I also operate an in-depth guitar-learning app called Guitar Super System, with tens of thousands of students. I’ve been featured in many top-level guitar publications, collaborated and interviewed with some of the biggest names in the guitar world, and I’ve even put out a solo album called Lotus, drawing deep from my instrumental guitar nerd roots.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building an audience from scratch was tough—competing where negativity lurked, and editing/uploading daily videos meant making hard creative decisions . College humbled me, demanding discipline, and breaking into a saturated YouTube guitar scene took perseverance and thick skin.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m proud of how my channel blends clear, cinematic teaching with humor and showmanship. I’ve interviewed guitar legends (Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde, Yvette Young, Cory Wong…) and carved out an authentic voice—part teacher, part entertainer—on YouTube. My debut album Lotus and my app Guitar Super System are milestones I’m particularly proud of.
