Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Smith.
Hi Tyler, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
So I grew up in a small textile town in western North Carolina. Raised by my grandparents so that was quite a task to get them to support the music bug but my dad actually got me a kit for Christmas when I was 11. I was self taught until I was 13 and started taking lessons from Paul Riddle from Marshall Tucker Band until I graduated high school and moved to Los Angeles to attend Musicians Institute for 2 semesters. I moved back to Carolina and played locally until a friend from music school suggested I try Nashville. I moved to town January 2 2009 and as they say, the rest is history.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I can’t say it’s been smooth sailing for me. I didn’t move to town with many distinct goal in mind other than to play and be around like minded people. Nashville seems to be hard on musicians that take their craft seriously and really have a vibe and sound of their own. The country music world is simply a machine that doesn’t like to stray from straight ahead playing with minimal creativity to none. It’s the only city with a scene that openly thrives on an invisible mindset musically. I had to keep my head down, work all I could and eventually I started finding my clicks of musicians to work with. It isn’t for everyone but you’ll find your crowd if you stay true to your own guidance.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
After 17 years living and working in Nashville, I’ve developed a passion for recording and really thriving in that avenue. I’m not sure what I’m known for beyond having an identifiable sound on my instrument. I just hope I can find a gig that allows me to be the player I am and trusts me to make the music feel the best it can.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I also love to cook and bake. I’m a father of a 6 yr old girl that owns my entire soul.
