Cody Murphy’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

Cody Murphy shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Cody, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think the main thing that’s misunderstood about media coverage is that it’s 100% glamorous 100% of the time. It’s not. There have been many nights where I’d be scrolling through my phone, waiting for an email or text that doesn’t come through.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Cody and I used to host a podcast called Weekdays with Murph from 2012-2024, where, for the first two years of the show, we covered the soap opera industry, then for the last ten years, we covered independent music. I’m in the process of figuring out my next move in the media coverage industry, so we’ll see what happens.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
So many people. In the broadcasting world, I could name about 10-12 people like Kristyn Burtt, Ty Bentli, Betsy Spina, Sandra Dee, and many others. Just watching how they conducted themselves on air taught me a lot about radio and the industry itself.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. In terms of the podcast, I wanted to give up more times than I care to count, especially when things weren’t going well.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’d like to think so. I’m sure my friends will say the same.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I’d hope, and I said this on my podcast to virtually all my guests, I hope, beyond everything I do with media coverage, etc., that people see me as just a good, solid person who cares about people.
