Community Highlights: Meet Alexandria Hampton-Hollis of Indigo Tennessee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Hampton-Hollis.

Hi Alexandria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’ve always felt that I’ve been guided toward the life I live today. As a young girl, I was immediately interested in everything unusual. When I reached my teenage years, those interests progressed into crystals, dreams, and energy, and I knew that I wanted to create a career based on those things I felt called to. As I grew older, some experiences inspired other parts of me. My parents and I managed a building called Spring Street that my grandfather had built, and we had dreams of having a community center there, as well as a brick-and-mortar version of what I do today. Still, ultimately, the timing and location were not right. I was still young, and looking back now, I am very thankful that things went differently. However, those times inspired me, and I have dipped into those old passions to recreate them differently. Once I finally took the chance and opened Indigo, I spent the next couple of years learning about the basics of business while beginning the process of crafting creative and eccentric beeswax candles. Over time, I also added more products to that list. Around the third year of Indigo, I started to see growth; by the fourth year, I had decided that I wanted to do more than just craft and sell items. I wanted to tap back into those old dreams of building a community for those who are different and looking for something outside the norm. And that is how my Dickson County Witches Meetup, the Flower Child Market, Gaia Rising Mini Market, and Mystic Maker’s Market also came to be.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been challenges. One of the biggest was trying to get my footing down when I began the journey of Indigo. I quit my day job at a dog daycare and dove head first into learning how to be a business owner, which was an obstacle within itself. I have learned a lot, though, and I’m still learning something new daily. Following that, I noticed some pushback once my business began to see some growth and success. It was brought to my attention that people didn’t want to see me succeed and tried to throw roadblocks in my direction to halt my progress. Ultimately, I now see it as a blessing, though. Because of that experience, I forced myself to become more open-minded and get creative about building my opportunities rather than wait for them. Doing so has been so beneficial to me and my business. Since I started working on changing my mindset, things have been much smoother, and most of my challenges now are just trying to keep up with the business expansions.

We’ve been impressed with Indigo Tennessee, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Indigo Tennessee is the original supplier of crystal candles and eccentric witchy supplies in my hometown of Dickson, Tennessee. In addition, I am the founder of The Flower Child Market, The Gaia Rising Mini Market, and The Mystic Maker’s Market. I also host the Dickson County Witches Meetup, where I hope to provide a community where weirdos can unite. At Indigo, I aim to provide you with a unique and creative collection of beeswax candles that can be used for spellwork, their wonderful scents, and their enchanting ambiance. I also craft roll-on perfumes, ritual oils, herbal smoke blends, stick incense, herbal smoke cleansing bundles, and supply crystals, tarot and oracle decks, spiritual books, decor, and homegrown herbs from my cottage. I hope to provide you with items that can be used for your everyday, magical life while sourcing as many ingredients from my cottage as possible. I chose Indigo as the business name because I’ve always been drawn to the term indigo children. They are known to have difficulty fitting into society because they are meant to shake things up, be rebellious, and bring something different to the table. I try to reflect that sentiment in my creations and my actions.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
So many! I’m often inspired by the things I am watching, listening to, or reading. One of my my favorite candles I’ve created is The Mad Hatter, which is inspired by Alice in Wonderland. I have a very old copy that includes Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. It was a gift from my grandmother and one of my most prized possessions. I also regularly listen to podcasts whenever I’m working, generally Time Suck or Mile Higher. They both focus on true crime and other oddball topics that I find very interesting.
