Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Potter.
Hi Allie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I love food – but I didn’t always. I’d always wonder, “Am I eating too much? Too little? Do I meet society’s (unrealistic) expectations of what a woman should look and be like? Will I ever?” Then I started CrossFit in 2016; and for the first time in my life, I felt strong and powerful. The more passionate about fitness I became, the more I realized that it mattered what I was putting into my body. For appearance, sure (who doesn’t love to see some abs?!); but also for how I could perform. I had to give my body the nutrients – and the fuel – it needed. Not only for tomorrow, or next week, or even next year; but for 40 years from now. I love hiking, kayaking, long walks with my dog, and lifting heavy weights – and I wanted to develop the habits NOW that give me the best shot of doing all these things for years to come.
So I began to learn more about nutrition for my own benefit; and that quickly escalated to me sharing what I learned with others. I was certified as a nutrition coach and began providing 1:1 coaching to other members of H Dub Athletics in Nashville. In about a year and a half, that grew to several gym partnerships in Middle Tennessee and lots of independent clients – enough to pursue building out the business full-time!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a bumpy road at times – and in fact, sometimes it still is. But that’s the fun of it too!
Originally, we gained almost all our clients from referral and word-of-mouth. Which is awesome; but eventually, we hit a plateau with that and had to start building out more intentional sales and development efforts. Current and past clients were saying incredible things about their experience with fuelED, so we knew what we provided was valuable – but we needed more people to know about us. We are still in the process of building brand recognition and awareness.
And leaving a stable, full-time job at an organization to pursue your own thing can be challenging in and of itself. Imposter syndrome is real. I still have to regularly remind myself that I am knowledgeable and capable enough to do this.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
fuelED’s premier service is individualized nutrition coaching.
It is not a meal plan.
It is not a 30-day challenge.
It is not a quick fix.
There is plenty of nutrition information out there – but most of us don’t have the time to sort through it all or the expertise needed to determine what’s legit and relevant (and what’s not). At fuelED, we apply the information to each client’s specific situation and equip them with the knowledge, guidance, and accountability to help find the right strategy – one that they can stick to – for them and their specific goals. We focus on both short-term goals (related to performance, aesthetics, etc.) and long-term goals related to health and longevity; and we individualize each client’s plan according to their starting point, specific goals, interests, and lifestyle.
We know that the journey to health and happiness isn’t a perfect one. We fall down, we get back up. We learn, we grow, and we move the needle towards where we want to be. And we believe, if someone is willing to commit and trust the process, that we can achieve the results they want to see – together.
We’re currently accepting new clients; and we’re also open to partnering with fitness providers to add nutrition coaching as a service for their members. Those interested can learn more at our website: befuelEDnutrition.com.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite memories is bringing home my very first dog, a husky named Jake. I was the only child at home, and I was so excited to be getting a puppy to play with and take care of. He quickly grew to be bigger than me, but we did all sorts of things together – we hiked, we played in the snow, we watched TV. Having him was a highlight of my childhood.
My husband and I now have a husky named Huck, who’s basically my whole world – and I am forever grateful to Jake for showing me how special having a dog can be! 🙂
