Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Flores.
Hi Alyssa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my fitness journey fall of 2012 while a freshman in college. During high school, I had always been “that cute chubby girl” where others would make remarks on my body or compare me to my fellow peers. I stopped eating for days at a time and slowly began dropping weight, and this behavior was reinforced by everyone complimenting me on my body. I went through a vicious cycle of not eating to eating very little for days at a time, eating obscene amounts, and utilizing laxatives after feeling guilty about eating from 2009-2015… SIX YEARS I did this to my body. I broke down to my husband in 2015 and he engulfed me with love and support and we found a therapist to help me during that journey. We worked for a solid 12 months 2015-2016 and I finally had the green light to start my bodybuilding journey! In those 12 months, I had gone from 130lbs-210lbs at 5′ nada. I had been ghosted by 5 ‘big name’ coaches where I paid, sent my check in pictures + the goal of competing in bikini, and wouldn’t hear back from them.
I finally found a coach early 2017 who said he believed in me and that I could get on that stage. I was EXCITED!! He had me compete fall 2017 at 130lbs, fall 2018 at 120lbs, fall 2019 at 111, and finally I completed at the Arnold 2020 at 105lbs. I placed around 12th out of 20 amazing ladies. BUT I realized my body had stopped responding two weeks prior to the Arnold. I decided that it was time to focus on my hormones against the advice of that coach. And at this time, spring 2020, I realized: I DO NOT WANT OTHER WOMEN BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BY NOT GREAT COACHES. I want to help women find the physiques they crave by actually fueling their body best. I want to help those who want to compete learn that there is a healthier way to go about things. I want to ensure that no other women in the future will have to deal with the insanely messed up hormones that I am now dealing with after 3.5 years of insane dieting for the stage. And if a woman is now in a similar spot, I want to be here to help women navigate out of this spot.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road is ever completely smooth, but I feel like each bump along the way has allowed me to grow in my ability to coach and now allows the smaller bumps to feel smoother.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the Head coach for Team Dumbbells N Doughnuts. We have 6 AMAZING ladies who coach for us, all with special interests and focuses. We coach clients who are prepping for NPC, NGA, OCB, INBA, INFB, and other bodybuilding federation. We coach clients who have goals for races, obstacle courses, etc as well as women who are looking to change their body recomposition for lifestyle. No matter the goal, our mission as a team to make sure each lady is also learning about how to fuel her body, how to ensure overall health, and be confident in all stages of the journey. When it comes to our approach, we are different than most. We cap off our client rosters at 20-40 clients per coach, we offer two check-ins a week, video chats 1-4x/month depending upon client’s needs, with customized macros and workouts for each person. We want to ensure our clients are healthy inside and out by prioritizing communication, community, and customization.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I LOVE IT when my clients begin to evolve past just worrying about the scale or body image. When a client gets happy over the little things, it makes my heart soar.
