Today we’d like to introduce you to Anyssa Newcomb.
Hi Anyssa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
In 2014, I started working in the animal industry at a doggy daycare, and from there, I knew I wanted to expand my knowledge and grow! In 2017 I started working at a Dog Training Facility in Boise, Idaho, where I quickly fell in love with this industry and helping dogs and clients reach their full potential. Halfway through college, I realized that training dogs was my passion and decided to pursue that career route once I graduated college. I attended Boise State University, earning a Bachelor’s of Psychology and graduating in 2018. I was fortunate to attend the Prestige’s Michael Ellis School for Dog Trainers In California. My experience in this industry has mostly come from hands-on training, the school of hard Knox!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Perfecting my craft and building a business has not been easy. There are so many different opinions and ideologies in the dog training industry that sometimes, getting clouded by the noise and opinions can be difficult. I have a solid foundation that I was fortunate enough to learn from my previous training company and have built on it. There are things that I have taken out of my training and things that I have added in, and every dog is so different, so being able to adjust on the fly is super important. I have a core ideology that I base a majority of my training on, but there are things I have taken from other trainers and implemented when needed. I use a lot of Classical and Operant Conditioning in Dog Training. In addition to the numerous opinions in the industry, geography has played a huge role in my journey. As the pandemic started, my husband and I moved to Nashville in 2020. By the end of the year, we were back in Idaho simply because of the pandemic. And the challenges it brought on. in 2021. We were fortunate enough to purchase a house in an area where there isn’t a dog trainer up close to me or someone with the experience I have. But trying to market for the Nashville area is difficult because I live about an hour away. So living out in the country certainly has pros and cons.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
