Community Highlights: Meet Britney Jones of Bennett Beauty Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britney Jones.

Hi Britney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been doing hair since I was about eight years old. I started with dolls, then started doing my own hair, then with friends & family.

After high school, I went to Tennessee State University where I graduated in 2011 with a degree in Business Administration with a minor in Entrepreneurship. Shortly after, I enrolled in cosmetology school.

After graduating from cosmetology school, I know I did not want to immediately open a salon because I had no clue how to! I also knew I did not want an ordinary hair salon. So, I worked in several salons & beauty stores kind of meandering along until I figured things out.

I have immediate family members who came to me after finishing cosmetology school, that wanted answers to some of their hair care issues. Hair loss was a major issue, but I had no clear solution for them. I went to Columbus, Ohio & received certification as a Hair Loss Specialist to better understand how I could help those family members, but I did not look into it as a career path.

I was mostly doing trendy styles, colors, cuts, those types of things & slowly I started to back away from the hair industry because I felt lost & couldn’t find my place. I later started volunteering with the American Cancer Society & the Look Good Feel Better program, where I helped facilitate beauty classes for women with cancer.

After working with those women, I wanted to know more about the body & why & how various issues affect the scalp & hair the way it does for some people. I enrolled in a nursing program & started working in healthcare. By 2020, when Covid-19 occurred, I was starting to question whether I wanted to stay in the healthcare industry. It was a hard year for a healthcare worker.

My mother was also diagnosed with breast cancer & not knowing where that would take our family really made me think. I struggled with my decision many times but never made a definitive career move & time just passed by. Closer to the end of 2021 with the health mandate for healthcare workers, I was faced with having to make a decision. I had graduated with a degree in Health Science & was debating which route to take next.

At that time, I chose to start looking into forming my business but ultimately, I stayed in healthcare, honestly being too scared to make the change. In 2022, the health mandate was a lot of pressure for me, so I decided to go for making my business official & I did just that! I started Bennett Beauty Solutions in 2022.

Our slogan is ‘Health & Beauty: Working Together’ because I wanted to create a haircare infrastructure that not only makes our clients look good but also be able to correspond with their health care providers & really create a game plan to achieve the hair care goals our clients seek. Whether it’s from medication, medical treatment, genetics, stress, pregnancy, or various medical conditions.

Hair loss is a major issue & it’s often seen as cosmetic or vain. For anyone who has experienced hair loss for any reason, it’s definitely not. It’s a loss of confidence, it’s a loss of identity, it’s shame, it’s discomfort, it’s an embarrassment, it’s depression, & for some it’s even isolation.

We strive to give our clients their quality of life back. We are a client-focused hair care salon. We work hard to ensure our client’s privacy, confidence, knowledge, & trust in our specialists & their work. We appreciate the privilege of working with such amazing people!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest obstacles have been deciding to step out on faith, starting a business while working full time & being a single mother, & finding the resources I needed to get started.

It’s definitely not for the faint of heart. Starting a business takes a lot of patience & being willing to learn from your mistakes. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Bennett Beauty Solutions is a hair salon that specializes in hair care & cranial prosthesis for clients experiencing hair loss. I am a hairstylist/hair loss specialist that helps clients analyze their scalp/hair condition & helps find a solution including regrowth, preventative measures, & styling/maintenance.

We are not an ordinary salon. Though we do offer services including hair cutting & coloring, our clients are only those with some form of hair loss. We wanted to make sure we offer our clients the privacy & detailed attention they may not receive at a regular hair salon.

We are proud of our professionalism & how our brand has been embraced so far. We want people to know that if you are experiencing hair loss, you do have options! We are hair care professionals that want to give you the knowledge, resources, & solutions to your hair loss needs.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5-10 years, we definitely plan to expand to include nail care, skincare, & hydration therapy. Many clients have health issues that affect all of those categories & we want to offer them a one-stop solution.
