Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Jones.

Brittany Jones

Brittany, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey to founding Grace Wellness & Consulting began in my youth as an inquisitive, observant, and empathetic young girl growing up in Forrest City, Arkansas. From as early as I can remember, I had an innate ability to connect with people. I was deeply attuned to their energy, emotions, and the stories they carried. While some may have called it “being in grown folks’ business,” for me, it was about understanding people on a deeper level. I never met a stranger, and people seemed to find comfort in my presence, often opening up and sharing their lives with me.

With a natural love for storytelling and connection, I pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Central Arkansas, inspired by trailblazing journalists like Tamron Hall. I honed my skills at WREG News 3 in Memphis, Tennessee, with dreams of becoming a news anchor on the Today Show. However, I graduated during a tough economic recession where job opportunities in the industry were scarce. Feeling disheartened, I pivoted, working various jobs in retail, as a paralegal, and in mortgage loan processing while searching for what truly aligned with my purpose.

It was during this period of uncertainty that two dear friends from college suggested I explore social work and consider becoming a therapist. At the time, I knew very little about the field, but the idea immediately resonated. I realized that what had drawn me to journalism, amplifying voices, listening to untold stories, and fostering human connection, was the very heart of social work. As I researched further, I felt an undeniable pull toward its core values: the importance of human relationships, advocacy, and social justice. In that moment, everything clicked and I knew I had found my true calling.

In 2012, I embarked on my journey toward becoming a therapist, earning my Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Tennessee, with a focus on Clinical Social Work and Trauma Treatment. This was one of the most challenging yet rewarding times in my life. I was newly married, raising two young children, and holding onto a dream of one day launching my own private practice. I was intentional about building strong relationships with my professors, mentors, and peers, knowing that a supportive network would be invaluable in my career.

On the day of my graduation, a professor who would later become my clinical supervisor offered me life changing advice. She told me to never let go of my dream of private practice and assured me that when I became licensed, there would be a place for me at her practice. True to her word, after gaining experience in various areas of social work, including hospice and palliative care, working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, supporting offenders in the criminal justice system with severe mental illness, and treating individuals who had experienced complex trauma, I joined Symmetry Counseling as a therapist.

For four years, I thrived in this role, growing both professionally and personally. I felt deeply fulfilled knowing I was making an impact in people’s lives. But even in that fulfillment, I sensed a greater calling, the dream of building something of my own.

Then, in 2020, the world changed. The pandemic forced our practice, like so many others, to transition to virtual therapy overnight. This shift, though unexpected, became the catalyst for my next chapter. The experience gave me a crash course in managing a practice independently, navigating new ways to serve clients, and gaining confidence in my ability to lead. During this time, I prayed for clarity, asking God to guide me in naming my practice, something that would forever remind me that I did not take this journey alone.

In 2021, I launched Grace Wellness & Consulting, LLC, an exclusively virtual mental health practice serving individuals across Tennessee. What began as a solo venture has since grown into a thriving group practice, specializing in treating depression, anxiety, and trauma.

Looking back, every step, every challenge, every pivot, and every leap of faith has led me exactly where I am meant to be. Grace Wellness is more than a practice. It is a reflection of my lifelong passion for human connection, healing, and empowerment. My journey is a testament to the power of purpose, resilience, and trusting the process. And for that, I am deeply grateful.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The challenges I have faced have all come after I made the decision to pursue social work. Honestly, once I answered the call and stepped into my purpose, each step seemed to fall into place. From being accepted into the MSSW program as a non-traditional student without a prior social work degree, to securing my first professional social work job just two weeks before graduation, to advancing into a leadership role within two years, and ultimately stepping into private practice within the first five years of my career, the path unfolded in ways I never could have imagined. Like a divinely orchestrated plan for my life.

However, the obstacles I have encountered have largely stemmed from systemic barriers. Passing the standardized licensure examinations was a significant hurdle, as was facing discrimination as a black, female Social Worker when clients or employers questioned my competency based on my race and gender. These experiences often led to feelings of imposter syndrome, forcing me to navigate the internal and external challenges that came with them.

Despite these obstacles, I have remained committed to my purpose. Each challenge has strengthened my resolve and deepened my passion for this work. I am grateful for the journey and the lessons it continues to teach me.

The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to embrace the “both and” of the journey.
