Community Highlights: Meet Christian Herrera of Castillo Masonry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Herrera.

Hi Christian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I was 12 years old, I’ve been helping my father with various construction projects whether it was a DIY project at home or a job on a construction site during the summers.

When I was 18, I began to work under my father full time and it was during this time when I began to really learn about the masonry trade.

Although my father is a master at his craft and unrivaled when it comes to work ethic he did not have the luxury of formal education growing up in rural Mexico which meant he didn’t have the formal requirements to create a full-fledged construction company.

This motivated me to begin studying residential landscape design as well as begin the process of creating my own LLC. Through various mentors and resources, I was able to begin studying my first course in residential landscape design and take a course in construction management. (Special thank you to Matt Hiner and Tom Reber.)

By 2021, I had obtained a business license. I also completed my first course in residential landscape design and construction management course. Fast forward to 2023 and I have obtained my Home Improvement license which allows me to bid on more expensive jobs.

I am a strong believer that there is always room for improvement no matter how good you are at something so I am currently studying a more advanced course in residential landscape design and learning the process of gunite pool construction with the help of Gene Kulas Pools. I still continue to work alongside my father and am always learning from him thanks to his 20+ years of experience.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It certainly isn’t always smooth sailing.

There’s always something new and unexpected in business ownership, and sometimes it isn’t all good so it’s important to have a growth mindset and to remember that there’s always something you can do to put yourself in a better situation.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Castillo Masonry?
Castillo Masonry is a high-end masonry-based construction company. If I had to put in one sentence what we do it would be this: We transform backyards and make them look AMAZING. What makes Castillo Masonry different from other businesses is that we have a laser-focused approach.

We dedicate ourselves completely to only a handful of projects at a time so that we can generate massive amounts of progress whilst keeping quality at a constant high. This causes projects to be completed more efficiently (still keeping that high-end quality) and in turn, makes our customers happy and fulfilled.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to have what I call “patient urgency”. This means focusing all your time and attention on the current moment, always trying to make the best of it right now.

If you do that for a long enough time at a consistent rate you’ll look back and realize you’ve built something special.
