Community Highlights: Meet Corina Picchiottino of Redefining Roots, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corina Picchiottino.

Hi Corina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
From an early age, I was deeply interested in understanding everything in the world around me, including people. I ventured into healthcare and the industry of serving others when I first became a Certified Nurse’s Assistant (CNAs) in high school. I started my first nursing job in a residential care facility for the elderly and was exposed to the value of caretaking and belonging. It was essential to address the physical and medical needs of the patients. Still, I quickly learned that the most significant impact on their longevity and overall health was quality time and visitations with friends and family. This experience piqued my interest and curiosity in psychiatry and mental health. As an avid learner, there was no question that I would expand my knowledge and skill set.

I completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Lipscomb University. Through my clinical training, I was continually drawn toward psychiatry. I felt deep compassion for helping others, furthering my understanding of their needs, and empowering individuality. Furthermore, I witnessed the power of healing through relationships and rapport with the care team, exclusive of the physical and medical needs being addressed.

I began my nursing career in an inpatient psychiatric hospital that exposed me to various mental health disorders, including individuals struggling with addiction, mood and thought disorders, and personality disorders. I further expanded my skillset and spent time working in a residential treatment center that treated a wide range of addictions and eating disorders. I attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) and obtained my Master of Science in Nursing degree. After a few years, I was ready to continue my educational journey. I wanted to break the stigmatization surrounding mental health in the hopes of redefining mental health care. Redefining Roots was born after completing my degree and gaining some experience in an outpatient clinic.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
This is a funny one. The journey has not been easy, making it worthwhile, like a diamond in the rough. The execution of my business plan began in February 2020. As you can imagine, everything was put on pause once the pandemic hit in March. However, just because my doors had not officially opened, I continued to work on refining the business plan and foundation, securing my practice location in Midtown, and meeting with referral partners. Fast forward to having my practice for over a year, and I am still adjusting to the frequent pivoting required in business. I am always learning new things, re-evaluating what is working and not, and trying to forecast to continue serving my patients in new and fresh ways.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and founder of Redefining Roots, I wear many hats. I consider myself to be down-to-earth and approachable. The ability to treat clients as humans first and patients second is so important, and I believe this is how we stay authentic and vulnerable and maintain a sense of belonging. Throughout my years working in the mental health field, I noticed the lack of a sense of belonging for many. Creating the brand and vision for Redefining Roots was instrumental in destigmatizing mental health and addressing the root causes of our mental health issues. I don’t believe our past choices or mental health diagnoses should define us. I utilize an integrative mental health care model that is whole-body focused, patient-centered, and trauma-informed to provide holistic healing using various modalities, including medication management, nutritional supplements, lab testing, and genetic testing. Patients will always receive individualized education and supportive therapy as a standard of practice at Redefining Roots.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Nashville is such a fun city! Like many others, I am a transplant. My husband and I moved to Nashville over 10 years ago and haven’t looked back. It’s the perfect blend of a city and country lifestyle. With a quick drive, you can escape the hustle and bustle but have the advantage of all a city offers. My most minor favorite thing about Nashville is the traffic and limited parking! I love the accessibility to all of the parks and trails. Not to mention, I can usually find a hot yoga studio in every pocket of town – my favorite!
