Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. James Bush.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey has been one of resilience, revelation, and purpose. Born in Washington, D.C., I was raised primarily by my mother, whose dedication to my education helped me overcome an early academic delay. After graduating high school in 1999, I moved to Nashville to attend Fisk University—a cultural shock that would forever shape my perspective. Though I began with promise, I dropped out twice, still unsure of my path.
Early adulthood was marked by real-life lessons—working at McDonald’s, marrying young, and navigating the struggles of self-discovery. Later, I spent over a decade working in a metal fabrication plant, an experience I now see as formative. Surrounded by men whose lives had been touched by incarceration, addiction, and redemption, I began to understand the depth of human struggle—and more importantly, how true healing begins with understanding.
That foundation eventually pushed me back to school, where I earned my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and became a licensed psychotherapist. My early training at Cumberland Heights, a substance abuse treatment center, showed me that addiction is often a symptom of deeper unresolved pain. That insight became central to my therapeutic philosophy: treat the whole person, not just the diagnosis.
My path wasn’t linear. In the midst of growth, I endured a painful divorce, strained relationships, and even a brief arrest. On December 2, 2019, a night forever etched in my memory, I had a powerful awakening about manhood, mental health, and the societal systems that often leave men unsupported and unheard.
Instead of letting my past weigh me down, I chose to channel it into purpose. I founded Bush Counseling Services, launched The Mind of A Man Podcast, and co-founded Let’s Have Manversation Inc.® with Dr. Omekia McNeal—a nonprofit devoted to creating safe spaces for men to engage in honest conversations, mentorship, healing, and empowerment.
Today, I am not only a therapist and speaker—I see myself as a vessel for transformation. With my clinical insight, lived experiences, and unwavering faith, I am committed to redefining how we talk about manhood, mental health, and second chances.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has been anything but linear. I was once a two-time college dropout who faced a painful divorce, strained relationships, and even an arrest. During that season, I also wrestled with moderate alcoholism and made a series of choices that could have completely derailed my purpose.
But I refused to let those struggles define me. Instead, I chose to use them as stepping stones for self-discovery, healing, and growth. Today, those very experiences allow me to connect deeply with the people I counsel. They give me a well of empathy, authenticity, and real-world understanding that few can replicate—and they serve as reminders that even broken pieces can be rebuilt into something stronger.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed psychotherapist, thought leader, and founder of Bush Counseling Services, committed to transforming lives through mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. With over a decade of clinical experience, I bridge real-life experience with professional insight—serving not only as a healer but also as an advocate for systemic change, especially among underserved and often overlooked communities.
As President of Let’s Have Manversation Inc.®, I lead a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that creates intentional spaces for men and young adult males to explore mental health, identity, purpose, and healing. Through mentorship, media, live forums, and strategic partnerships, my work normalizes emotional transparency and disrupts the cultural silence surrounding male mental health.
My passion for empowerment extends deeply to returning citizens and veterans. I champion initiatives that help formerly incarcerated individuals rediscover their worth, break free from stigma, and receive the mental health and substance abuse support they often lacked. Likewise, my experience working with military communities at Fort Campbell and in Clarksville has positioned me to uplift veterans with trauma-informed support and holistic wellness programs, including the development of The ReAssembly Line™, a veteran- and family-centered healing initiative featuring REBOOT Recovery.
I firmly believe that strong men build strong families, and strong families build strong communities. That conviction drives me to address alarming realities—like the high suicide rates among men—by offering real solutions through conversation, education, and connection. Whether discussing trauma, addiction, fatherhood, relationships, or identity, my mission is always the same: to help men become the most authentic, empowered version of themselves.
From launching platforms like The Mind of A Man Podcast, to co-founding a job readiness program through Interview with A Suit™, to co-creating Men Inspiring Men: Days of Manspiration™ installments, my work is deeply personal, purposeful, and prophetic. Recently, my co-founder Dr. Omekia McNeal and I were honored when Let’s Have Manversation Inc.® was formally adopted by Eta Beta Sigma, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Nashville Chapter—a recognition that affirms the importance and impact of this movement.
Looking ahead, I am focused on creating a culture of resilience, growth, and mental health normalcy, while continuing to seek strategic partnerships that will help scale our impact and strengthen our reach. My voice continues to echo across therapy rooms, communities, and platforms as a call for healing, accountability, and hope.
What are your plans for the future?
I am focused on expanding the impact of my work on a broader scale—locally, nationally, and globally. I am actively scaling my mental health consulting practice to reach more organizations and communities in need of culturally competent, trauma-informed care. My goal is to increase my presence on national stages through speaking engagements that blend my clinical expertise with lived experience. Alongside this, I am developing educational programs and training modules designed to equip the next generation of mental health professionals and community leaders.
Through my leadership of Let’s Have Manversation Inc.®, we are preparing for significant growth. Our plans include expanding the State of Manhood Summit™ Tour to more cities, producing new live and digital content, and launching webinars and a televised series to redefine what it means to be emotionally healthy and spiritually grounded as men. In addition, our Juvenile Delinquency – LHM Y.O.U.T.H. Initiative is designed to give young men tools to discover their voice, own their path, and honor who they are, while our Men Inspiring Men: Days of Manspiration™ installments continue to highlight the wisdom, challenges, and victories of men who are committed to growth and leadership.
We are also building strategic partnerships and community-based programs to ensure sustained impact and accessible support for men and young adult males across diverse backgrounds.
