Community Highlights: Meet Elizabeth Burton, LCSW

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Burton, LCSW.

Hi Elizabeth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up, I witnessed and experienced what I would later come to understand as developmental trauma. It was at the young age of 13 I knew I wanted to be a counselor and help families. School was a safe space for me and I was the first in my immediate family to receive a college degree. After completing my Masters in Social Work program, I moved to Nashville for a counseling position.

My first seven years in this city was focused on my clinical work, I spent time in residential treatment centers with individuals and their families recovering from the effects of trauma, at an agency on the frontlines of the opioid epidemic (specifically supporting expectant parents and lowering the rates of relapse and neonatal abstinence syndrome), at a local nonprofit counseling center, and volunteering leading a group for survivors of human trafficking. These experiences cultivated the clinical foundation that gave me the confidence to move into private practice work in 2019.

Healing from relational wounds is the bravest path we can walk. I create a safe space where clients can enter the sacredness of their story. Exploring early attachments and relational experiences help us to see how the past may impact the present and find clarity for the future. My therapy style is client-centered and attachment-based, integrating therapeutic approaches that are individualized. I value cultural humility, understanding power imbalances in systems and relationships. As a Perinatal Mental Health – Certified professional, I have advanced training and experience working with pregnancy, postpartum, adoption and attachment-related issues.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Early in my professional career, I worked for an organization that operated in a power imbalance and witnessed harm to colleagues, clients, and unfortunately myself. During the time, it felt like the loss of a dream and led to questioning what brought me to this city. Now, I realize this challenge led to deeper growth of confidence, a network of trusted colleagues, and unexpected and invaluable experiences that ultimately shaped the clinician I have become.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Perinatal Mental Health professional for the States of Indiana and Tennessee. I support adults and adolescents (16+) navigating anxiety, depression, grief/loss, behavioral issues, substance use & trauma recovery, including but not limited to: childhood abuse and neglect, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, perinatal mood & anxiety disorders. I am offering in-person sessions in my Berry Hill + Cool Springs offices or telehealth for any resident of IN or TN.

I am set apart in that I am dually licensed in two states and specialize in perinatal mental health.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love working in the greater Nashville area because mental health is valued and less stigmatized. It’s not uncommon for my clients who move here to find themselves entering the therapy space for the first time because a friend or colleague recommended it based on their own experiences. We are a people who are rich in diversity and often here pursuing our dreams. Dream pursuit unearths many of our deepest longings, fears, and hopes and these are some of the most meaningful things to wrestle within the safety of a therapy session. As far as what we can improve as a city is more affordable housing, better public transportation and roads.

Pricing:
