Today we’d like to introduce you to Elyse Badewitz.
Hi Elyse, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been a licensed Esthetician for 13 years and have always known I wanted to open up a day spa. Born and raised in Southern California, I started doing Esthetics and spa management in 2008. On a whim, I decided to move to Nashville, thinking it would be temporary. I have now been here almost ten years and am proud to call Nashville my home.
Spa Haus opened up in November 2014, however, it was called Love Skin Nashville back then. I had high hopes and dreams to open up a big day spa, but at the time I knew I had to start small, so I opened up a room in a hair salon. I worked here for about six months, taking clients and waitressing to help pay the bills. Every day for those six months, I drove up and down Bransford Ave. in Berry Hill. I knew when the time was right, I would open my spa up on that road. Fast forward to July 2015 and I am signing the lease and growing my vision even more. I went from 1 room by myself to three rooms with staff! My heart and soul went into creating experiences for our clients and getting to know everyone who walked in our doors. After 2 1/2 years at this location, my landlord asked what my next steps were going to be. We already outgrew his beautiful space, so I knew it was time to grow again. In September 2017, I bought on our current location (which happens to be a block over from our old location) and changed the name to Spa Haus Nashville. Now that we were much more than just skin, I wanted our name to reflect it. I come from a German heritage, as my dad was born and raised in Germany, so ‘Haus’ seemed to be the perfect personalization.
The building I bought was an old stitching store. I spent three months completely remodeling it and bringing it back to life. December 19th, 2017 was our grand opening as Spa Haus Nashville. 7 treatment rooms, an amazing staff and so many more services. My dreams were coming true and the hard work was paying off. We grew exponentially by word of mouth, all because our clients can tell we truly care, our staff is amazing and the space is warm and inviting.
It is now May 2021 and we are halfway through adding on a two story addition to our current building! By late summer, we will have a bigger relaxation room, a patio garden, 11 treatment rooms and a party room to host private parties.
This road has been one filled with many emotions, mostly good and of course, some bad. But seeing my business grow while being able to pamper and get to know our incredible clients makes it all worth it. My dream was to open up a beautiful spa where memorable experiences are created and I am so happy to say that my dream is now my reality.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Is being a business owner ever a smooth road? I wish. To be honest, for the most part things have been smooth. This was my dream, my passion, my everything. I set myself up for success by working for other day spas and learning the industry before opening up my own place. I spent months crunching numbers, researching product lines and taking business classes. I will never forget, when the spa was just a dream in my head, I had people ask me “What will you do if it doesn’t work out?” My response was always “It will.”
With that comes dedication and I put much of my focus into the spa, The COVID closure was by far the hardest thing for me. Everything was going so well…like couldn’t be better…then boom. All of a sudden everything just stopped. We closed our doors for over two months and I spent everyday worrying about my employees, our clients and the future of our industry…let alone the world! I couldn’t sleep, I got terrible anxiety and didn’t have much motivation. When we reopened after the COVID closure, about half of my staff decided not to come back. People come and go, that is life…but this hit differently and it was devastating. Some left with integrity and others did not. It was the worst feeling I have ever felt, but one thing I’ve learned is life moves on.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Spa Haus Nashville?
