Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Loewen
Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started out after college working in the Corporate Healthcare IT industry for 7 years in various project/client manager roles. I am a 3rd generation home builder so when I was looking for a change in my career, the opportunity presented itself to join my brother and sister in law in their real estate investment & development company in Nashville as a project manager in their Operations division. After working with them for several years I decided it would make sense for me to study to get my Residential & Commercial General Contractors license to be able to grow the business. Once I passed the exams and got my license my sister in law, Callie, and I decided it would be an amazing opportunity to start our own LLC that was female-owned to run this new General Construction business. Callie handles the design and client communication side of the business while I manage the construction side.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As you could probably imagine being a female in male-dominated field I have encountered some challenges along the way. The amount of times I have been asked if I was the wife or assistant of the “one in charge” on a job site by either a supplier, sub-contractor, or inspector is staggering. It’s always interesting to see their faces when I tell them I’m neither of those things and in fact am not only the General Contractor in charge, but also one of the owners of the company. However, this challenge of being taken seriously or respected for the knowledge I do have has made me who I am today and helped drive our company to be successful. It has also provided job opportunities with female clients that felt a level of comfort with us because we are “different than the norm” and they felt like we cared and would listen to them more.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Marcato Group, LLC?
Our business name is The Marcato Group and we are a female-owned and managed General Construction company. We specialize in residential new construction and renovations as well as commercial office build outs. In music the term Marcato means notes that are played distinctively and with separation (i.e. set apart) and we think this suits our way of doing business just perfectly. We believe that through a beautiful design, meticulous craftsmanship, and seamless communication our clients will feel like part of the family.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was the one that was involved in every club or activity there was. I have always loved being around people and learning from them or learning something new. Even though I was someone that was involved in everything I also tended to be a bit shy around people. One of the ways I always felt like I could express myself was through dancing. I started with ballet at age 3 and tried every type of dance there was and even participated in dance competitions through the years. Dance was definitely my outlet for creativity and was a way to challenge myself both mentally and physically. I am lucky enough that dance is still part of my life even as an adult and continues to provide that outlet and challenge. Nashville Ballet offers an amazing community adult division and there is a class called DANCEFIX which is really more like a community of amazing people that has been such a joy to be involved with.
