Community Highlights: Meet Holly Geronzin of GEICO LOCAL OFFICE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Geronzin.

Holly Geronzin

Hi Holly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my insurance career in 1996 as an entry-level sales agent at GEICO’s corporate office. Before that, I was a military spouse and a stay-at-home mother, and my plan was simple: work for a couple of years, save money, and then pursue nursing school.

That plan changed about a year and a half in, when I was asked to travel to Iowa to help open a new office and coach and train new agents. It was during that experience that I discovered a passion I didn’t know I had—mentoring, teaching, and developing people.

Although I was offered a position in Iowa, I returned home and pursued a career in sales management. Over the next two decades, I held a variety of leadership roles, including coach, sales supervisor, hiring supervisor, management intern mentor, and manager over the New Hire Training Department. I spent 21 years growing professionally, helping others succeed, and building strong teams.

In 2017, with my children grown and in college, I felt a clear pull toward something more.

A former mentor and leader who had successfully opened an agency reached out to share that a new office was opening in Nashville and encouraged me to consider applying for it. From the outside, the decision appeared risky—I was walking away from a six-figure salary, a pension, a 401(k), and more than two decades with a stable company to start an agency from the ground up.

What others saw as a risk, I saw as an opportunity.

Nashville—Music City—was the perfect place to build something of my own. I took a leap of faith into entrepreneurship, and I have never looked back. While the journey has required hard work, discipline, and resilience, it has been incredibly rewarding.

Coming from a very humble upbringing, I learned the value of showing up, working hard, and believing in what’s possible. By doing so, I’ve not only changed my own future, but helped create lasting opportunities for my family for generations to come.

If my journey proves anything, it’s this: with determination and courage, building the life you envision is possible

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges was the financial and emotional leap required to open an agency from the ground up. Unlike some companies, GEICO does not provide startup funding. You must rely entirely on your own savings. That meant being extremely disciplined, thoughtful, and patient from day one.

Finding the right location alone took six months. The space had to meet strict corporate guidelines while also fitting my vision for the business. I ultimately chose our location at 2120 Rosa L. Parks Boulevard, near MetroCenter—an area with tremendous potential, but one that required commitment and belief in the long-term vision.

The first 14 months were especially demanding. I worked seven days a week, while my husband, Bill, remained in Georgia to keep his day job. When he wasn’t working overtime, he spent weekends in Nashville helping me build the business. We watched every penny, and there were times when operating in the red was unavoidable until the agency became profitable.

Another challenge was building a team before the doors even opened. I hired a group of agents with a July start date—some of whom left secure corporate GEICO positions to follow me. When our opening was delayed, I paid them for two months before we were officially open. It was a financial strain, but it was the right thing to do.

Even with a nationally recognized name like GEICO behind you, success is not automatic. Establishing trust and credibility within the local community takes time, effort, and countless long hours. There were days I was exhausted, moments when I questioned myself, and times when leading others meant pushing forward even when I wanted to stop.

At one point, even my mother asked, “Can’t you just go back to GEICO?”

Finally, things began to stabilize, we were profitable. And then came COVID—such a scary time for all of us.

Much of the area I serve is right here in the heart of Nashville, and many of my clients depend on tourism to pay their bills—including their insurance. During that time, many people simply couldn’t pay, and others had to cancel their policies altogether.

At the time, I had a full staff, including a full-time outside marketing representative I had just hired, along with an additional salesperson. Overnight, everything changed. My marketing rep could no longer visit local businesses, and with fewer people driving, buying cars, or even thinking about insurance, business slowed dramatically.

I made the difficult decision not to let anyone go. Good people are hard to find, and I was committed to my team. We didn’t lay anyone off—and eventually, things began to return to normal.

Shortly after, the insurance industry entered a very challenging cycle. While this business has always been cyclical, this was the toughest cycle I’ve experienced in my career—this time not as a corporate employee, but as a small business owner.

Loss ratios were high, and GEICO had to raise rates to remain profitable. While I understood the reasoning, it certainly presented challenges for both my business and my clients.

But the saying “this too shall pass” has never been more true. It did pass—and GEICO is stronger than ever. That’s what happens when you represent a company built for the long term. Sometimes, hard decisions have to be made to protect the future.

But perseverance, faith, and consistency carried me through. All of those challenges shaped not only the business I have today, but the leader I’ve become.

As you know, we’re big fans of GEICO LOCAL OFFICE. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
When most people think of GEICO, they immediately think of the 1-800 number. One of the most important things I want readers to know is that I am a GEICO Exclusive Agent. Customers pay the exact same price they would by calling the national number, but they receive something far more personal—the support of a local agent and a local team who live, work, and give back right here in the community.

My agency serves all of Middle Tennessee, not just Nashville. We are proud to have earned over 583 customer reviews with a 4.8-star rating, which reflects our commitment to service, transparency, and long-term relationships. That level of trust and consistency truly sets us apart.

At the core of everything we do is a simple mission: to save our customers money while protecting their assets. Insurance is not just about price—it’s about making sure people are properly covered and confident in the protection they have.

What I am most proud of, brand-wise, is my team. They are the heartbeat of this agency. Every interaction, every policy, and every customer experience is shaped by their dedication, knowledge, and care. They make the difference every single day.

Another thing that sets me apart is my accessibility and hands-on approach. When you call my office or stop by, there’s a strong chance I’ll personally be there to answer the phone or greet you.

I believe in being present, available, and directly involved with both my clients and my team. That level of accessibility builds trust, strengthens relationships, and ensures a higher level of service.

Our office itself reflects who we are. It doesn’t look or feel like a traditional insurance office. With an industrial design, open ceilings, and a Nashville-inspired vibe—including a welcoming bar area—it’s a space meant to feel approachable, comfortable, and distinctly local. We have extended hours, we are open from 9 am- 6 pm and we are available on Saturday!

With two decades of experience in the insurance industry, I had many options when deciding what type of agency to open. I could have chosen an independent model or aligned with other major carriers. I chose GEICO because I know they stand behind the promises they make. GEICO is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, is rated A++ Superior by AM Best, and maintains a 97% customer satisfaction rate—standards I am proud to represent in this community.

Another common misconception is that GEICO only offers auto insurance. In reality, we provide a full range of coverage, including auto, motorcycle, boat, ATV, golf cart, home, condo, renters, landlord, jewelry, identity theft protection, and umbrella insurance.

Ultimately, I want readers to know that insurance doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or impersonal. With the right partner, it can be straightforward, trustworthy, and truly local. Our Google reviews speak volumes—they reflect the consistent, high-quality service and trust we’ve built with our clients.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
The best way people can support or work with us is simply by giving us the opportunity to earn their business. If we can save you money and provide the right coverage, that’s a win. And if we’re not the right fit, that’s okay too—we believe in honesty and education first.

If you currently have one GEICO product, we’d love the chance to review your coverage and see if bundling an additional line makes sense. And if you worked with GEICO in the past but left due to rate increases, we encourage you to take another look. Over the last 10 months, our rates have become much more competitive, and many customers are pleasantly surprised by what we’re able to offer.

We make it easy to work with us. You’re welcome to stop by our office and meet with an agent—no appointment necessary. Prefer to handle everything over the phone? That works too. We’re also active on social media and love staying connected with our community there.

For realtors and local professionals, collaboration is a big part of our mission. We enjoy partnering with real estate agents by providing insurance quotes, educational support, and even hosting or sponsoring open houses with food and giveaways. Supporting other local businesses and building strong community relationships is something we truly value.

And finally, if you’ve had a great experience with us, tell someone. The best compliment we can receive is a referral.
