Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Keiser.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Nashville and grew up in the area. So after I completed my doctorate in nursing practice at UT Health Science Center in Memphis, I decided to stay in the Nashville area and serve the community I grew up in. Starting in 2018, I worked as a nurse practitioner in family medicine, urgent care, and pulmonology at Ascension Medical Group downtown.
Over the next 4 years, and from my experience as an RN for 4 years prior to that, I was starting to see how large corporations were delivering healthcare to patients and felt that it could be improved. In 2022, after COVID pushed a lot of providers to utilize telehealth to give medical care, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to start my own project.
That’s when I started Eos Telehealth. The vision is to be able to give patients in TN access to affordable and great-quality medical care.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been some challenges, but I’m blessed to have friends and mentors who have helped overcome a lot of the barriers that keep medical providers from starting their own businesses or practices. The biggest challenge has really been working with insurance companies.
One of my main goals with the practice is to make sure that the care I give is affordable, which means taking insurance. However, medical billing and the business side of getting credentialed with insurers is not something that is part of our education to become healthcare providers. Finding solutions has required patience, creativity, and help from colleagues and mentors.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Eos Telehealth?
Eos Telehealth is a small regional-based telehealth business, that aims to provide affordable, accessible, and quality medical care to Tennessee. It is a general medicine clinic which means that it offers services as broad as chronic thyroid care to PrEP (or HIV prophylaxis). Typically though we are focused on acute care complaints, mental health, and weight loss. What sets Eos Telehealth apart is the personalized care that patients can’t get with other telemedicine clinics.
Centralized telemedicine clinics operate on a national scale and often do not have access to regional or local resources, imaging centers, or laboratories. Being based in the area it serves, Eos Telehealth is able to connect with patients’ PCPs, community health resources, and local imaging centers to give patients much more personalized and quality care.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The largest lesson I have learned is the importance of resilience and persistence. Working for years at Ascension Hospital, I was able to call administrators or tech support for problems I encountered while trying to provide care.
However, when encountering these problems as an independent private practice, it takes a lot of patience and persistence to resolve issues with electronic charting companies, insurers, and billing companies. Having to trust that I have the ability to overcome these challenges and operate the business so that I can continue to provide care to my patients, has been a rewarding lesson to learn.
