Community Highlights: Meet Jamie Taylor of J Taylor Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Taylor.

Hi Jamie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself

My name is Jamie Taylor, Owner and Principal Designer of J Taylor Designs, an architectural design boutique firm located in Murfreesboro, TN.

I have been passionate about interior design and architecture since I was young, so it only made sense for me to pursue this as my professional field. When I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in interior design, I was hired by a design firm to work on architectural projects. Sadly, during the 2008 recession, I was forced to leave the firm and later joined Husky Truss and Building Supply, where I developed a strong understanding of home construction, such as structural engineering, material take-offs, and truss design. This shaped my approach to both attractive and structurally sound home design.

In 2009, I started my own business, J Taylor Designs, and grew it to the team I have now due to the increased demand for my services. I form deep connections with my clients as I design their homes to ensure all their wishes are respected, their budget is taken into consideration, and the building process follows all regulations.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?

Generally, the experience has been easy-going; however, being a female in a predominantly male workplace can be difficult. Building strong ties with the contractors has been imperative, and a strong spirit was necessary. Demonstrating my expertise has been the most arduous task, but 20 years of experience in this field has made that achievable now.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

J Taylor Designs offers the services of a residential architectural firm without the need for a license. We specialize in creating custom home plans for clients and supplying construction documents for the building. We aim to fill the gap between a draftsperson and a full architectural firm.

What sets us apart is that we are an all-female firm. Whether working with a wife and mom on their kitchen and laundry room design or thinking through how an empty nester may live and flow in their home is a life we can relate to. After the fun of design work is over, we are able to provide the client and builder with an accurate set of building plans due to the construction knowledge we all carry.

What does success mean to you?

Having tangible evidence of my success in the form of a successful business that brings in money is excellent, but the real reward comes from seeing how I’ve impacted someone in their day-to-day life. Experiencing the gratitude of a homeowner years after completing their home and having them give me a hug and tell me how much they love it was when I knew for sure that I was on the right path.
