Community Highlights: Meet Jason Young of Jason’s Native Garden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Young.

Hi Jason, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I was born and raised in Nashville right by Percy Priest Lake. I grew up with a love of the outdoors spending my time hiking though the woods. My dad loved gardening and I was always right beside him planting flowers. My grandfather was a tree surgeon and my great uncle also owed a nursery, so growing trees and flowers came naturally. I got into conservation in my mid 20’s when I starting kayaking my local rivers and creeks. Seeing so much trash polluting our waters I wanted to help make a difference. I have removed a lot trash from our rivers and hiking trails in and around Nashville. Hiking through my woods one day I had a friend point out some invasive plants. He told me if I get rid of them native wildflower might come back. Sure enough, some natives started to come back. Mayapples were first then my favorite Green Dragon. I starting studying native wildflowers. Soon, I starting buying seed and growing them and became very successful at growing them. I had a friend tell me I should start a nursery selling only natives. I’ve been so grateful for that advice, and that I decided to start my own nursery selling pure wild wildflowers.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting your own business is never easy. Growing natives in an area with a lot of wildlife can be a challenge. There are natives that the deer love to munch on and others they leave alone. I found out the hard way which ones they love the most.

As you know, we’re big fans of Jason’s Native Garden. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I grow exclusively pure wild native trees, bushes, grasses, and wildflowers. What sets apart my nursery from others is that I grow only native plants. Not only do I sell native plants I also landscape with them and offer habitat restoration.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Being born and raised here I love my hometown of Nashville. I would love to see more trees and native plants all over Nashville.
