Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Burt.
Jeremy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a man of faith, and it all started with a dream showing me that I would someday be in a position to be successful. In the summer of 2019, I was having a conversation with a cousin that pertained to opening a barber school and it planted a seed. At that time, I had been a self-taught barber for 19 years in Akron, Oh. After the conversation, I decided to open a school of my own and signed up for barber college three weeks later to start my career. After a year of barber school, and my graduation date being pushed back due to COVID, I finished school at the end of 2020 and planned my move to Clarksville, Tn where my mother and brother have relocated to a few years prior. I sold everything I owned, including my personal home to self fund my dream. At this time, I became well connected with other people in the hair care industry and found a few mentors along the way with amazing hearts. This brought me to find the current building my school is in, setting up and learning the systems to run a school, and putting together my catalog and contracts. I was doing this while simultaneously building the school. Everything was built with my own two hands, from the mirrors on the walls, assembling the barber chairs, setting up the stations, painting the walls, and running our air lines for the school’s air compressor used at each student’s station to blow hair and debris off of the clients. The school officially in March of 2024 after years of set backs and unexpected delays.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to success is never easy. When I arrived in Clarksville, Tn, I soon learned that the barber laws were different from Ohio and I had to wait two years to receive my barber instructor license to open up my school. On top of that, I ran into some issues on opening up my building. The construction of my school was postponed due to my contractor not pulling the proper permits. On a separate occasion, I was also scammed out of $13,700 of my remaining money for the construction of my build-out. The landlord also notified me that the building was up for sale a few months after I signed my lease. So to finish the construction, I was working in a barber shop and using my personal credit cards. This was all while raising two boys as a single dad.
As you know, we’re big fans of Elite Self Image Barber College. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Elite Self Imager Barber College is a vocational college that takes the average man or woman and helps them to develop into an ELITE professional in the practice of barbering. I can say our program isn’t for everyone because of the high standards of timeliness and sanitation practices that we are accustomed to here at the school. I’m most proud of the brand based on we focus on ELITE developmental barbering skills and professionalism. I want people to know that when they choose Elite Self Image Barber College, they won’t pay for the haircut they will pay for the professional experience, and it will be a great place to learn how to become an ELITE professional barber.
