Community Highlights: Meet Karl Braun of Hall Booth Smith PC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karl Braun.

Hi Karl, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Nashville and studied classical guitar at Blair School of Music with John Johns. In 1976 I went to Eckerd College in St. Pete, FL and graduated with a creative writing degree and continued my study of classical guitar.

At Eckerd, Jamie Serino and I started jamming together and became a touring duo in the tradition of Loggins & Messina, Simon & Garfunkel, Seals & Crofts, Brewer & Shipley. In 1983 I moved to Atlanta and continued gigging as a solo artist.

In 1988, I went to law school at night at Georgia State University College of Law. I worked all day at a college textbook store and went to law school during the night time hours when I used to play gigs. I graduated law school in 4.5 years magna cum laude. In 1995 I joined Sullivan, Hall, Booth & Smith which is the same firm at which I still practice (now Hall Booth Smith, PC.)

In 2002 I moved home to Nashville and opened the HBS Nashville office to grow our entertainment and intellectual property practice group. I’ve been practicing here in Nashville until the present representing singer/songwriters, producers, managers, small publishers and labels as well as entertainment industry entrepreneurs.

My practice also includes federal and state litigation.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Many challenges touring without mobile phones and other recent technological developments. Also financial challenges when gigs slowed down. Those and other challenges inspired me to go to law school.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
As set forth in response to the prior questions, HBS is a law firm and I practice entertainment and IP law. I’ve been featured in Best Lawyers in America for work in the entertainment industry for over a decade.

I’m also very active on social media as a fitness fanatic.

What are your plans for the future?
My wife and I just purchased property in Cerra Azul Panama where I intend to retire someday. We are now designing and building a house in the “blue mountains” of Chagres National Park. I will have a full recording studio and large guitar wall.
