Community Highlights: Meet Khailyn Thompson of Khai Dreams Travel Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khailyn Thompson.

Hi Khailyn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello there! My love for travel began at a very young age watching my parents go on several international trips while leaving me at my grandma’s house. It was so frequent in my mind I even remember my engraved bag entitled “Traveling to Grandma’s” with my name on there as well. The nerve. Eventually, my parents got tired of my younger sister and me complaining about being left behind so they decided to get our feet wet. My 10-year-old sister and 12-year-old self went on our first international trip via a 5-day cruise out of New Orleans, LA with our parents and immediate family. It was not only our first cruise but our first train ride as well.

We rode the train from Memphis, TN to New Orleans, LA where our port was. We visited Cozumel, Mexico, and Progresso and this trip sealed my love for travel forever. From then on every school trip and  family trip I could attend I went and loved the experience both domestic and international. Fast forward to the end of 2021, I was looking for a travel agent to assist me in finding the best birthday trip ever as I was turning 25! My first experience wasn’t that great however I did more research on social media and found my mentor Marissa of Spread your Wings Travel Agency. Her platform seemed to match what I was looking for, a trip that was nice but wouldn’t break the bank. I submitted a research fee, praying all along this would be my answer to my trip dilemma.

Who knew while I was waiting I would keep seeing posts about if you love to travel and book trips for yourself, friends, and family why not be a travel agent on Marissa’s page. This was timely as I was already looking for another source of income that was more flexible in schedule and to supplement my current salary. I did my research as I frequently suggest to everyone and even took Marissa’s travel agent webinar where I learned about the travel business better.

On December 31, 2021, after praying to God I made up my mind that I am going into 2022 as a travel agent and I began the process. After 2 months of training and preparing, I launched Khai Dreams Travel Agency on February 21, 2022! 6 months later I’m still shocked that I am a business owner, have a small team, and make my client’s dreams of traveling come true!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Ha, is anything worth having easy? I was provided with a great mentor and support system don’t get me wrong but even with my preparation and training, there were still some bumps in the road. One of my struggles along the way was maintaining a good balance between working on my day job, living life, and having a business. To be completely transparent, I am still working on this first one daily.

A schedule helps and keeps me on track but like anybody, I like to deviate sometimes and that’s when one of the three gets neglected. However, I am aware and I am working daily to maintain a good balance. In addition, this first struggle led to me losing friends because I set boundaries about Khai Dreams Travel Agency.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned along my journey is to not be anxious/ worried. As a believer in Jesus Christ, I prayed before making my decision to start Khai Dreams Travel Agency but like anyone I worried often. I honestly never thought I would be a business owner, let alone love it as much as I do. There were so many unknowns however I knew from past worries in life that I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me, Philippians 4:13.

While in that chapter of my favorite bible verse I came across verse 6 that spoke to all my worrying I was doing and the answer to all my worrying was simple: don’t worry, pray about everything, and let your request be made known to God. This was big for me because I prayed before starting but didn’t always pray on issues that arose to ease my worries. Lesson learned!
