Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddie Toma.
Hi Maddie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I actually went to school at Ole Miss for Political Science. When Covid hit, I was finishing up my last semester and decided to pursue a nutrition certification. Nutrition was always something I have been passionate about, specifically the female hormone side of things. Going through college, I was a former gymnast and always wanted to keep that athletic side of me so starting competing in CrossFit. After some overtraining and under-eating I went through some hormone issues as a result. After a two year journey of recovery, I saw first hand how much my food intake and food quality impacted that recovery. So I always had an interest in nutrition but never dared to believe that it could become a full time career. I always thought it would be something I would just look into for myself on the side. Once people started reaching out for coaching, I saw this was something I could actually pursue long term. Although I had plans to return to school for graduate school and possibly even go into law after Covid, I began having so much fun working with my nutrition clients that I decided to go all in with what I loved! I have had the best experience helping other females navigate exactly what I had walked through myself and found myself able to relate to them on a personal level.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road by any means! Being an entrepreneur is always risky! Unlike a normal salary, you cannot count on a consistent income month to month and can never truly turn off the “work” side of your brain when you are building your own business. And nutrition has always been so much more than a side hustle to me- it is my dream to make it my livelihood. I cannot count how many times I have wanted to stop and settle for a more traditional job in order to have that security. But I have always been more of a big risk, big reward person. And at the end of the day, if I am able to help just one woman make a genuine difference in her life and even allow her to be there for her family and pour out to others because she is now caring for herself better, all of the stressful days, risks taken and opportunities for more stability that I have walked away from are so worth it.
We’ve been impressed with Nutrition by Maddie, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Nutrition by Maddie encompasses all things women’s wellness and hormone support. I take the whole woman and address her needs holistically. Hormone imbalance is such a prevalent issue in our modern world and can be the culprit for so many symptoms that are deemed “normal” by so many today including unexplained weight gain, skin issues, stubborn belly fat, afternoon crashes, trouble sleeping, etc. I want to change the norm. Women shouldn’t have to just live with these things. So we focus primary on nutrition to reverse so many common symptoms. But what sets me apart from so many other nutrition coaches is I believe lifestyle is huge! So we go beyond just a meal plan and dive into different aspects of your lifestyle to see how we can address various habits to balance your hormones. I am knowns as the menopause and hormone guru. A big part of my clients are also struggling with menopause and the unexplained changes that are happening in their body. So I empower women with the knowledge to address these changes head on and show them they don’t have to settle for these symptoms forever. I offer one on one coaching which includes in-depth lifestyle changes, a nutrition plan and eating schedule and most of all, a relationship based approach with day to day support. I like to be in the trenches side by side with my clients as they make these lifestyle changes. Most of all, I am so proud of offer a sustainable approach to nutrition that isn’t overwhelming and is truly something my clients can carry with them and continue to practice for the next 30 or 40 years.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Oh man! I have had the best mentors. I truly don’t know what I would do without those who are a step ahead of me in the entrepreneurship world and have turned back to help me along the way. Jamie Free is a close friend of mine who is a prominent nutrition coach in the competitive CrossFit world. I will never forget sitting down with Jamie one day when I was considering quitting my full time job to launch my own nutrition business. Instead of being competitive with another nutrition coach, he fully pushed me to take the leap and go for it and even provided connections and helped me launch a partnership with the CrossFit gym he owns to launch Trivium Nutrition when he moved away from Nashville. He has been with me in so many instances on this journey as I have reached out with several questions!
I also could never do this without my amazing husband who has been so supportive in the risky entrepreneurship lifestyle. He has supported us both so that I can pursue my dreams of launching my own business and has been my biggest cheerleader through it all!
