Community Highlights: Meet Maria Vega Porras of LUBI Cookies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Vega Porras

Hi Maria, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It started with me making cookies for fun and giving them to my coworkers. They always told me that the cookies were REALLY GOOD and one day suggested that I should start selling them. After thinking about it and discussing it with my husband for a long time we decided to do it.
Even after we made the decision we were still unsure if people were willing to pay for our cookies so we made a test batch for my coworkers, about a half dozen, and the reaction was surprising. Within 15 minutes of arriving at work all the cookies were sold and people were coming up to me asking when I would make more or if they could order ahead for another day, that was when LUBI cookies was born.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
By far the biggest struggle has been to build LUBI cookies while we both have full time jobs. Coming home from work after a long day or spending our days off making the dough or baking the orders can leave us drained. Another one is also how demanding some customers can be, questioning everything from the size of the cookies, flavor selection, price and availability can also be draining in a completely different way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Here at LUBI we believe that passion and love are essential to baking and in some ways can be the most important ingredients. We strive so that our customers not only enjoy a delicious gourmet cookie but also one that was made with care and a sincere desire to make every one of them happy. What separates us from other brand is the level of connection with our customers. With every box we deliver we try to create a bond between us and them, for example we hand write a note with every box to thank every customer because in the end we hope they will be a customer for life.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was, and still am to some extent, very shy and introverted. I have always been a very creative person with hobbies that involve me using my hands, such as writing, baking, decorating and the like. I also like to stay active by dancing or swimming.
