Community Highlights: Meet Olivia Piana of LiveWell Thermography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Piana

Hi Olivia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My mom was sick with cancer for most of my life, and too much of hers. At 32 years old she found a lump in her breast and went for a mammogram; they didn’t find anything and she was sent home. She pleaded with her doctor to get an ultrasound which was how they confirmed her lump and she was soon after diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. One of my first memories I have was when I was 4 years old, playing with her bald head giggling, young and oblivious as to how sick she was at the time.

16 years later when I was 21 and she was 48, she was diagnosed again with an aggressive form of breast cancer while I was in college. I spent my next year of college mostly at home with my family, driving my brother and sister to soccer games and to and from school while my dad was taking care of my mom and driving her to treatments. We watched her get sicker and undergo an intensive treatment plan, a double mastectomy, and another painful “recovery.”

This time, I vividly remember when her bandages came off, catching her staring at her disfigurement in the mirror and falling to the ground sobbing. I remember holding her while she cried and finding myself praying for one of the first times in my life that she would get better. And just like the first time, she achieved “remission” status.

Only 3 years later, my mom’s cancer had returned and it spread to the rest of her body. This time it was a fight she would not win, and my family endured her withering away in front of us in about a year and a half after her diagnosis. There was nothing that could be done at this point.

I know cancer all too well. I have witnessed too many of my loved ones suffer from it, and now I have to live the rest of my life, at 27 years old, without my mom.

Since she has passed, I have started my own thermography imaging lab in Nashville, TN. My goal is to share this full-body health screening with as many people as possible and teach them about earlier health monitoring.

I truly believe thermography screenings should be a part of everyone’s health routine, taken as seriously as your dental, dermatology, or OBGYN appointments, as well as starting screening at a young age.
If this happened, we could see a lot better outcomes for a lot more people. I think we could see signs of illness earlier and people could be more proactive about their health. Incorporating this holistic screening could be what saves a life.

I want to be a part of the story changing for cancer. It’s why I am passionate about providing this service, spreading awareness on routine screenings, and why I hope to make a positive impact on cancer cases, and overall wellness for women and men.

The loss of my mom turned my life upside down and in her memory, I want to do what I can to help others.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Far from it. I think anyone who is dealing with grief will understand that grief never leaves us, and healing is an ongoing feat. It is something that takes a lot of work every single day and even almost 3 years after losing my mom, some days are better than others. I try to find some peace knowing that I am doing what I can to make a difference for women and their families.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was when my family would go to a beach house we rented at the end of the summer every year before we would go back to school. From a very young age, I remember sitting on the dock with my mom, laying into her while she held me and we watched the waves together. She would point out different birds or jellyfish getting close to the dock while the sun went down. These moments brought me so much peace and I think of them often.
