Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Peterson.
Hi Patrick, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a second generation tax guy. I pretty much grew up in my family’s tax firm, for a couple years I even got off the bus at the office.
After going to MTSU, I ended up taking a job with my family tax firm on 4th ave for many years.
During those 15 years, I learned how quickly tax law can change with the ACA (Obamacare), TJCA (2017 tax changes) and even the implementation of RTRP requirements for preparers just to be knock down two years later.
So when I left to start my own firm, my idea was simple. Help people start and run businesses without worry that you are in state and fed compliance or getting killed by outrageous tax bills.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been an easy path. I left my position but decided against poaching clients, even though I had been taking care of them for years, as that was my mom’s business.
I went from being booked for months in advance to hardly working, but it gave me some much-needed time to study up on the new changes with the One Big Beautiful Bill.
We’ve been impressed with Peterson Accounting and Tax, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I assist individuals in establishing businesses and maintaining compliance and tax obligations. Our services encompass incorporation/LLC formations, tax planning, tax preparation, payroll services, and bookkeeping.
Having resided in Nashville since 2020, I am delighted to share that I have had the privilege of working with musicians and music industry clients from diverse backgrounds. From touring musicians performing on some of the world’s most renowned tours to tour managers, engineers, technicians, and even touring chefs, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with a wide range of individuals in the music industry.
I believe I have a strong connection with creatives because I create a more relaxed and informal environment, and I always strive to tailor my advice to their specific needs.
I want to emphasize that taxes can indeed be intricate and may not be everyone’s favorite, but they don’t have to be overwhelming or stressful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has always shined on me. I was lucky enough to get some good clients early and made some friends along the way.
Bad luck too, during the floods one of my musicians claimed a loss due to the flood destroying his guitar collection.
The IRS audited the loss and we had to dig deeper into the value of his collection. Turns out we had under represented the value and the IRS had to write him a check. This isn’t typical but almost nothing is all bad or all good in my opinion.
