Community Highlights: Meet Peter Newsom of Peter Newsom Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Newsom.

Hi Peter, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My Dad used to drive around the countryside every Saturday morning as the sun began to rise, taking the most beautiful photographs. He would pull over at the side of the road, and take photos of the vast Tennessee fields, the birds in the sky, falling branches from oak trees, or anything else that caught his eye. It was his passion for photography that sparked mine.

I started tagging along with him every weekend, taking photos of anything that we thought was worth remembering. It was during this time that he taught me how valuable moments were, and how incredible it is to be able to capture them, to look back on forever.

More than a decade later, I carry that with me as a wedding photographer. Moments can fly by in an instant and can be forgotten forever if they aren’t captured. That is why photography is so important, and why I love being able to help couples remember their special moments forever.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the best way to achieve any goal is to take it one step at a time and to be patient with yourself and the process.

During high school, I started working at a summer camp in the area as the camp photographer, where I took about a thousand photos per week and listed them on my website, where parents could buy photos of their child for $5 per picture.

After working there for four summers, I was able to buy a professional camera and some nice photo equipment, and I reached out to a local wedding photographer that I admired, offering my help.

Greg & Jess Photography really took me under their wing and mentored me as I assisted them on weddings every weekend or so. It was that relationship and experience that was so valuable and lead to me being able to feel comfortable enough to start my own wedding photography business.

It was by no means a straight path to where I am now – there were so many twists and turns, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

We’ve been impressed with Peter Newsom Photography, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is rooted in a passion for love and photography. I genuinely care about the couples that I work with, and I know how special these images are to them and their families forever, and it is deeply fulfilling work.

I believe my photo-journalistic, documentary style of photography really sets me apart from other photographers, and those who may only be passionate about the couple’s portraits and not necessarily the events before and after that. I believe the little moments are often the most memorable.

Another thing that sets my business apart is how I provide personalized quotes for couples, rather than overcharging with loaded packages. Every wedding is so unique and different, and I believe in working together to find a number that works for both of us.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One thing that some people don’t know about me is my love for animals. My wife and I have adopted an 11-year-old Border Collie named Aussie, and a 6-year-old cat named Jarny just this year, and it is the most incredible feeling coming home to them every day. Our dream one day is to own a farm where we rescue animals and give older dogs a place to live out their remaining years, filled with love and lots of treats.

  • My most popular price is $2500 but I provide specialized quotes
