Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Buttram
Hi Samuel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Sam Buttram, Co-Founder of Design In Flow. I have always considered myself a creative individual. I feel creating is part of my higher purpose in life. I started learning about web design and development back in the Myspace days. Coding ” cool ” themes for my friends pages in HTML in my free time. But my interests didn’t stop there. I strongly encourage anyone to explore a ton of different ways of expression before landing on just one. I picked up my first camera in high school and decided I was going to be a photographer, scraping together my small paychecks from my part time job I was finally able to pick up a camera and start my first freelance photography gigs shootings concerts, portraits, and weddings. Using my prior knowledge in HTML I was able to piece together a portfolio site for my work. My friend Matt Matheson, who is now an amazing DP/Cinematographer, was into producing videos at the time and started to tell me everything thing he knew at the time about video. I would take myself to Nashville with my friends to Live On The Green and just take photos and film videos. I realized the opportunity I had in Nashville and made the move in 2017 and have been here ever since. I had worked a marketing job up until the pandemic and learned alot about sales and business in that time. Always convincing my managers to let me design flyers and marketing materials for them. I was surrounded by alot of go getters and many of them started to reach out to me to design websites & logos for their own businesses for. I started to gain confidence in all my skills and realized that if I can give my all to another company, I can go all in on my self. I reached out to so many companies just to learn the video and web design business and honing my craft. I was getting work as a freelancer but the entrepreneur inside me wanted more.
But in the summer of 2023 I broke my collarbone in a bad mountain bike accident. I needed surgery and all i could remember was the doctor telling me a risk of surgery was “death”. I was scared for my life, but ended up going through with it and making a 100% recovery. I was out for months and felt defeated and ready to at least get my camera back in my hand or being able design again. Something changed within me after that experience. I felt that my life would be more fulfilling if i fully immersed myself in the design community. I Co-founded Design In Flow LLC with my partner Valerie Westover in Aug of 2023. With all of our combined experience in marketing, sales, web design, video production, 3d animation, and graphic design. We have what it takes to successfully help other businesses reach their goals and connect on a deeper level with their audience.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been all smooth sailing. There isn’t a secret handbook with all the codes. We have spent many weekends learning new programs and designing sites to add to our portfolio. We have had to make some sacrifices to be able to carve out this path. You must be the fool first before you can advance in being a master, and there is nothing more humbling than becoming a business owner.
