Community Highlights: Meet Shannon Yebuah of Cheer Hive Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Yebuah.

Hi Shannon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Cheerleading has held a special place in my life since the age of five, cheering in youth leagues and through high school here in Nashville. What began as a sport quickly became a foundation for confidence, discipline, and identity. In 2014, I stepped into coaching with the Nashville Cardinals and later became the Director of Cheerleading for the Shelby Park Jaguars, where I discovered my true passion wasn’t just cheer—it was pouring into girls and helping them see their value.

Cheer HIVE Nashville was born during the uncertainty of the pandemic, when many programs paused cheerleading altogether. I saw both a gap and an opportunity so I brought together the founding staff of educated Black women with cheer backgrounds who shared a heart for mentorship and empowerment. From the beginning, Cheer HIVE was designed to be more than a camp—it was meant to be a safe space where girls could grow on and off the mat.

Now five years in, Cheer HIVE has hosted nine successful camps and is preparing for its tenth in Spring 2026. In addition to our camps, Cheer HIVE is now on its second All-Star team! They perform at events across the city representing not only cheer excellence, but what it truly means to Honor the H.I.V.E. This year also marks the launch of Buzz Fest: Citywide Spirit Showcase, created as a space for teams across Nashville—at every level—to come together in celebration of cheer, unity, and the culture that connects us all.

Cheer HIVE Nashville continues to grow as both a program and a movement—shaping confident young leaders and reminding girls that who they are matters just as much as what they can do.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall, the journey has been relatively smooth. While we’ve certainly faced challenges, none have felt insurmountable. Our biggest hurdle has been not having a permanent gym space, which has required flexibility and creativity when securing locations for camps and showcases. As a nonprofit organization, funding is also a challenge—our heart is to host more free community events and open camp opportunities to girls who may not be able to afford them, and doing so requires the support of sponsors and partners who believe in the mission. Still, every challenge has pushed us to adapt and plan with intention. We truly believe our steps have been ordered, and because of that, the road—while not always predictable—has been steady and purposeful.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Cheer Hive Nashville ?
Cheer HIVE Nashville is a nonprofit cheer organization dedicated to empowering girls through skill development, mentorship, and community. At the core of our work is a nine-week cheer camp serving girls ages 4–13, where we teach fundamental cheer skills while intentionally building character through our guiding values, known as Honoring the H.I.V.E. Each season concludes with a showcase that highlights both performance and personal growth.

Our intentional culture is what sets us apart. Through our H.I.V.E. framework— we promote anti-bullying and create safe, affirming spaces for young girls. This mission is modeled by our coaching staff and reinforced through every interaction with our Queen Bees.
Her = Me (Self-Love)
Integrity (Discipline)
Variety (Sisterhood)
ExtraOrdinary (Spirit)
One of our proudest initiatives is the Tarhiya’s Truth Queen Bee Award, honoring the legacy of Tarhiya Sledge, a 12-year-old Nashville cheerleader whose life was lost due to bullying.

Beyond camp, Cheer HIVE leads the CHN All-Stars, for girls ages 7-14. They serve as a citywide performance team, performing in the fall and winter months throughout the city. We are also preparing for Buzz Fest 2026: Citywide Spirit Showcase designed to bring teams of all levels together in celebration of cheer and community. As a nonprofit, our goal is to expand access by offering more free events and sponsored camp opportunities, ensuring every girl has a place in the H.I.V.E.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
As a Nashville native, I truly love this city! One of the best things about Nashville is its community spirit—people genuinely want to support local businesses and initiatives when given the opportunity. The hardest part, though, can be navigating the city’s many opportunities—getting funding, spreading the word about Cheer HIVE, and finding the right venues and events for our All-Stars to perform. Still, the support and energy of Nashville make it an incredible place to grow a community-focused organization like ours.
