Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Murphy.
Hi Shelby, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Nashville, and I’ve spent over eight years working in dermatology, first in clinical nursing and later in aesthetics. That foundation gave me a deep understanding of skin concerns, how they develop, and the treatments available to help improve them. From there, I transitioned into a luxury spa environment, where I was able to refine the client experience and focus on pairing results with relaxation. Ultimately, I wanted to bring those two worlds together, grounded knowledge of skin and a luxury approach to care, to create a space where clients can feel confident and cared for while achieving healthy, glowing skin.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think any small business owner would call the first few months a smooth road, but I can honestly say I don’t regret it for a second. The financial challenges are real, but thanks to the incredible support we’ve received, and the loyalty of clients who have trusted me for years, we’re steadily finding our footing. The harder challenge, though, has been work/life balance. As any entrepreneur knows, the business never really leaves your mind. I’m learning to delegate more and build systems that take some weight off my shoulders, so I can be fully present with my husband and children when I’m not “at work.”
We’ve been impressed with Bare Skin, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Bare Skin is a place where you can show up exactly as you are and leave feeling a little lighter. We specialize in all things skin with a highly individualized, collaborative approach. Sometimes that even means pivoting from the scheduled treatment to something better suited in the moment. We look at the whole picture, how the skin responds, what’s left to address, and which treatment will make the biggest impact. While we love the results of treatment series, our true specialty is in mixing and matching modalities to deliver outcomes that can’t always be planned at the start, but evolve as we go.
We never push, and we see every client relationship as a partnership (and often, a friendship). Our role is to guide clients toward the best treatment for their skin, goals, schedule, and budget, while ensuring they’re always part of the process, with no surprises in the treatment room or at checkout.
One of the things I’m most proud of is our private label skincare line. I’ve poured more than 11 years of experience into developing products that deliver results without irritation, effective for all skin types and at a price that feels attainable. Along with our own line, we also carry select other brands, which allows us to create truly tailored skincare regimens for any concern.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Our faith has been the foundation of this small family business. My husband, Chris, and I continually pray for the Lord’s guidance and that our journey might be used, even in a small way, as a form of ministry. In everything we do and in every interaction, our hope is to reflect His love and ultimately bring glory to Him.
