Today we’d like to introduce you to Shikha Vij.
Hi Shikha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a dreamer; I have always enjoyed imagining luxury events that came to life with gorgeous decor. As a child, I would get drawn to patterns on my mother’s outfits and the jewelry pieces that she designed. One evening while I was in college, my warden & I were discussing the upcoming farewell party something like Prom but for college grads and she wanted to do something different, within seconds I came up with a dramatic idea that everyone loved. The biggest challenge was the budget but we pulled the whole thing off beautifully- I knew then that is my calling.
Years later, after the sudden passing of my little brother and then my father, I realized that there is only one life and one should do what their heart desires. At that point with the support of my husband, I left my highly lucrative medical career and took a leap of faith and have never been happier!
It’s been a little over three years since Party People Events and Décor came into being. I have to say that I am blessed. I have a stellar team, dependable colleagues and excellent couples/clients. We’ve done over 150 events, weddings, special occasions & corporate combined ranging from 7 to 1000 guests all over TN, AL & KY.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Well, like any other profession, you learn with time and experience. I would say years of dealing with patients and their caregivers prepared me for dealing with stress and anxiety of the clients and it also taught me to remain calm and composed in the face of adversity. I also feel as a planner, it’s vital to be two steps ahead of the client and in order to have a great prognosis, one must be able to diagnose a potential problem and treat it.
What started as a passion turned into a business, what else can one asks for?
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a full-service Event Planning and Decor company, we do weddings, corporate events, milestone events, Holiday parties, etc.! Along with planning and coordination, we offer custom design as well as decor service, owing to our extensive and exclusive inventory that is constantly updated, we take extreme pride & joy in creating bespoke events. Our Tagline is creating memories that you will cherish for the rest of your lives and we live for it.
Our strong multicultural background has equipped us to understand cultural nuances; therefore our major clients are either inter-racial or inter-cultural couples.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Commitment! I am a very driven person and highly motivated. My word is everything. If I say I’ll do it, consider it done.
My father always said- “If you have committed to something, do it- no matter what it takes, even if you lose money because you will get many opportunities to recover your losses but if you break someone’s trust, you can never earn it back.”
I strongly believe that as a planner, you have to feel for your client, you’ve got to treat each event as your own and do everything you can to make it successful. Of course, there are endless hours of planning, logistics, client calls, vendor calls, checking, rechecking, confirming, paperwork and then you see that smile on the client’s face.
I love listening to my clients and hearing what they have dreamed of for their big day- This is the best part, the excitement, the nervousness, the happiness all mixed into one makes it truly magical and when the big day arrives and they see that their vision has come to life that moment truly is what we cherish.
