Community Highlights: Meet Tanna Phillips of Six One Five Hair Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanna Phillips.

Hi Tanna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been cutting hair since I was 15 years old. Everywhere from Michigan, North Carolina to Tennessee. I moved to Nashville in 2018 with no plan and no job, I just knew I loved it here. I started in a salon downtown to get feelers of what the area was like. During the uncertainty of 2020, I started cutting hair out of my garage to make ends meet when my job closed down. I created personalized experience that quickly grew through word of mouth and genuine connection. My clients encouraged me to open something of my own, Six One Five Hair Co. It was official on June 15, 2020 — ironically a date the same as the salons name.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall it has been smooth. I originally opened the shop with one of my closest friends because we wanted to split the rent. Not knowing how much success we would have. We both got pregnant in 2022 and that was a struggle, figuring out how to balance family and a successful business. My business partner decided to go all in on family and left barbering all together. While I, newly pregnant had to figure out how to revamp and hire people to get it to thrive, knowing I was about to be on maternity leave. I had to trust the process. I definitely lost a handful of clients when I had two children back to back. The loyal ones stayed through my shifting schedule and new ones came along too thank goodness.

As you know, we’re big fans of Six One Five Hair Co.. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a boutique barbershop on music row. Two barbers-Tanna and Will. We specialize in all things men’s hair. Our small space sets us apart from other barbershops because clients get one on one time where they don’t feel like a number being rushed out the door. We truly love getting to know clients and giving them the exact cut that they want. We are so proud of the community and relationships we have grown. We want readers to know how much we love making people feel and look their best. We take so much pride in going through every phase of life with our clients as their world progresses, we are the constant behind every big moment in their life.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was always into fashion and clothes. I loved to paint and play piano and all things creative. I loved to rearrange my bedroom constantly and make things look perfect. That’s probably why my visual creativity transfers over to barbering. I never planned on doing hair but I had the option in high school to get credits from cosmetology school instead of normal classes so I took the opportunity and it somehow led me into staying in the visual creative space. I genuinely believe that my eye for symmetry and perfection helped with the perfect cut.
