Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Clark.
Taylor, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The story of the founding of our company (Legacy) roots back to my father. My father, David, has always had an entrepreneurial spirit which greatly impacted me growing up. He has owned numerous business’s which included landscaping and even building houses. This is what lead us to start our current company which revolves around cabinets. Before starting Legacy, I was working as an outside sales rep for a local staffing agency based in the Nashville area. I can remember one day I had just pulled into a gas station after leaving a promising meeting with a potential company that was interested in our staffing services when I answered one of the most impactful phone calls I would ever have. My father had called me and asked if I would be willing to partner with him to co-found a cabinet company. I said yes after some deliberation and then the research began. We learned everything we could about cabinet painting and even flew to Orlando to work with a company that does the same thing in their market. We both agreed that the key to our success was going to be to take things slow. We both kept our day jobs and worked on the business overnights and weekends. I can remember working 7 days a week while also balancing my school work at Middle Tennessee State University. After I graduated, we were finally able to take the company to the next level. My father and I both quit our day jobs and we began to scale full-force. I scaled the marketing side of things while my father focused on the operations sector. We hired our first few employees and began to train and instill our great quality within them. The Legacy quality is something that we are known for in our industry. Today we are continuing to scale and have cabinet jobs on the books all the way up to February. Yes, it was a slow burn to get to where we are today, but the wait was worth it. Our quality is top-notch and this is the biggest aspect of our company that we want to uphold as we grow. Good communication with customers and treating every kitchen like it is our own is something that has helped us get to where we are today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No, to say the least. It has been a curvy and extremely bumpy road getting to our current position. Balancing college work, my day job as a sales rep, and founding this company has been the number one struggle for me. After graduating and quitting my sales rep job, life became much easier to manage and I was able to put all of my time into the company. My father and I also have very different personalities at times which form many disagreements. I am more sales-minded while my father is more operations-minded. Luckily, we have been able to meet in the middle with certain things regarding the next steps in the company. Procurement has been another struggle of ours. Finding people to hire is easy, but instilling high quality in them that we are known for is another story. It is hard to find people that are passionate about the art of painting cabinets.
We’ve been impressed with Legacy Cabinet Coatings, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
There are countless things that I have learned along the way but the biggest would be to not let discouragement get the best of you. There were some nights where I would be painting cabinet doors in our shop at 10 pm because I had to get them done by the next day. “When you have to, you do what has to be done” is something that I live by nowadays because of how applicable it is to everything we do in life. It doesn’t matter what the obstacle is, “when you have to, you do what has to be done.” Conducting endless amounts of research is another thing that is huge when starting out. Being well-informed and confident in what you are starting is extremely important. How can you sell something that you don’t know anything about? Just when you think you’ve done enough research to start, do more. This got us into some trouble when we first started and I wish I could go back to change it. Lack of research can cause huge issues.
