Community Highlights: Meet Tristan Lanz of Tennessee’s Choice Plumbing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tristan Lanz.

Hi Tristan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Tristan Lanz, I own and operate Tennessee’s Choice Plumbing in Dresden, TN. We service all of northwest Tennessee. I started my plumbing career in 2017 at 18 years old in central Illinois. In 2020, I relocated to northwest Tennessee to be closer to my family and found a local job. After about a year and a half I needed to make a change for my mental health and wellbeing. My options were to drive almost an hour to work for another company, or start my own company. I started my company in 2021 and have gown it to four trucks on the road daily. From new builds, to repairing toilets, we do it all. I’m thankful for my friends and family for my support, as well as a lot of my plumbing colleagues who have given me a lot of advice as I’ve grown.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running my business has not been a smooth road at all. I started my business with my best friend at the time, and it ended up almost ruining our friendship. We had different goals for the business and decided to go our separate ways with me buying out his share of the business. After doing that, I went through a small rebrand and tried building my business to a point where I could operate strictly out of the office while I had techs in the field bringing in revenue. After about 6 months, I realized my reputation and quality of work had gone downhill. I didn’t have the correct standard operations in place or core values for my team to thrive. I had employees at the time that did not have the same dreams as me. Eventually I drew and line in the sand and told my team the expectations, and if they didn’t want to follow them I would grow on my own. Within a week I had fired both of my plumbers at the time, becoming a one man show. The first month I was by myself, we did more revenue than I had ever done in company history. I was following the process, treating the customers right, and priding high quality work. Over time, I was able to build on those precedents and now have a team that share the same goals as me. I’m very thankful to have gone through that struggle, because I would not be where I am today without it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Tennessee’s Choice Plumbing, we strive to do the best work possible on every job we go to. Anything from new builds, septic tanks, well repairs, and basic plumbing service work we can help with. We are not your standard plumbing company, we specialize in the peace of mind business. A customer that calls us will know that we will not be the cheapest, but we will offer the best solutions and always stand by them. If a customer calls us, they can confidently know that we will always take care of them and do the right job every time. Our core values are WATER:

Workmanship: We don’t just strive to be better than the next guy, we do the best work possible at every job we go to.

Accountability: We learn from our mistakes and our successes, applying them to every job in the future.

Teamwork: Not only do we rely on each other as a team, but we work closely with out customers and treat them like one of our own.

Ethics: We will always do the right thing, we will always be honest and provide the best solutions for all of our customers.

Reliability: We will always communicate to the customer and be the most reliable company they can count on.

One of the things I am most proud of about our team is the way we are investing back into ourselves. The state of Tennessee only requires one plumbing license to be held for an entire plumbing company, however we are working toward getting each and every one of our field techs licensed by the end of the summer. To the best of my knowledge, there is not any other company in our area that when you call them, you know you will have a genuinely licensed technician that has been vetted by the state of Tennessee to complete your plumbing work.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love to make a lot of social media content, I am always looking for people I can include in my content to bring in new ideas to spread the knowledge of plumbing or other trades. We also look for support from our customers on every service call we go to. We always give back to the community every month. On average, once every three months we will dedicate an entire day for free plumbing work to the community. Anybody that is in need can call us and get on the schedule, if they have a necessary plumbing repair and no means to pay for it, we take care of it for them. Every customer that gives us their business helps make programs like this possible. On the months that we do not do free plumbing work, we will make a donation to the community, whether it is paying off the local school lunch tabs, or donating to the local sports or FFA organization.
