Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Coppage
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in the mountains of East Tennessee where I was influenced deeply by my mother, a musician and music teacher. This blossomed my creativity early on. My work explores themes of family, memory, and human connection.
My passion for painting and drawing ignited in high school and continued as I pursued a BFA in painting and drawing at the University of Chattanooga. I extended my love for art globally, teaching art classes to various age groups in Brazil over the years. In 2017 I completed my BFA in painting and printmaking at Middle Tennessee State University, and I’ve been a dedicated working artist for the past eight years.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think one of the most difficult things about being a working artist is finding the balance to create income without depleting creativity in the process. That is something I’m still actively working through. In the past I’ve worked full time while also managing my art business. In January 2024 I decided to go part time so that I could put more focus into my work. Now the balancing act is managing commissions, clients, networking, and income, while also continuing to create my personal series and maintaining inspiration.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My personal work is rooted in exploring memory through painting and distorting photographs. I really enjoy having structural and figurative elements while also deconstructing and abstracting the piece. I use old family photos from the 50s-80s to create these paintings.
My commissioned works can include anything from pet portraits, family portraits, abstracts, and landscapes. I’m always open to working with the clients vision, and I do my best to have a variety of options so that my art is accessible to anyone!
How do you think about luck?
I certainly feel lucky to have the consistent client relationships that I do, considering my marketing and networking skills haven’t been top priority over the years. This is the year I’m working to change that. With that said wish me more good luck!
