Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Malloy.
Hi Abby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My family kickstarted my love for music – my dad grew up writing music and playing in garage bands with friends, and when I was 4 he started to teach me how to play the guitar.
I wanted to be just like him, so when I was 9, I started writing my own songs and decided that music was going to be my career. I had written and recorded so many different kinds of songs by the time I left for college that I knew it was time to take it to the professional level.
I started school at Berklee College of Music where I studied voice and had planned on studying recording engineering, but after my first semester at Berklee, I had a big change of heart after having a huge spiritual encounter and deciding to become a dedicated Christian.
I made a big move to Columbia, Missouri, where I joined a college ministry and started writing and recording Christian and worship music – the first release of mine being the song “Say Yes” that I wrote weeks after giving my life to Jesus.
From that release, my music career was catapulted and I started recording more and more music about my love for God. The people surrounding me pushed me to be better every day and provided me with incredible opportunities to sing, lead worship, and share my music everywhere I could go. After living in Missouri for 5 years, I felt it was time to move on to something bigger and to be a “smaller fish in a bigger pond.”
At the beginning of the pandemic in June of 2020, I made the move to Nashville, TN, and have done even greater things here. Since moving here, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to be a 2-year member of the Maverick City Gospel Choir, being a part of multiple albums, live recordings, and live performances.
Through Maverick City, I’ve been given the opportunity to sing at two Dove Awards, the Stellar Awards, and perform with artists like Crowder, Matthew West, Mandisa, Leeland, Sinach, Elevation Worship, and Maverick City leads like Brandon Lake, Dante Bowe, Naomi Raine, Chandler Moore, and others.
I feel so blessed to be able to get to do the things I do!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh my goodness no. There have been so many challenges along my musical journey. Though a large one has been a financial struggle, I think the biggest challenges are mental.
I know that God has huge plans for me, and I have a ton of ambition and motivation, but I can definitely underestimate my gifts and talents and feel timid when I don’t think I belong in certain groups of people I feel are more talented than I.
One thing I try to tell myself is: “If I was not meant to be in this room with these talented people, then I wouldn’t be there.” Finances will come and go and material things are all temporary, but your outlook, faith, and hope are things that you can keep with you at all times.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I write, record, and perform Christian/Worship music, and am known for my songwriting as well as my involvement in Maverick City Music. One thing I’m super proud of is my Christmas EP that I released in December 2021. It was actually featured on an NYC Times Square billboard for an entire week before Christmas.
It was such a surreal moment in my life and one that I will always cherish. I was able to go visit NYC to see the billboard and I sat in Times Square for a crazy amount of time just waiting for it to come back into rotation – it was amazing. Something that I think sets me apart from others is that I know what I want and I just do it.
I push myself to do better, be better, and get things done. I’m super focused and dedicated to my job as an artist, and I want to do this forever, so I work in a way that’s sustainable and future-oriented!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about our city is that you are constantly surrounded by talent and global influence wherever you turn.
To be surrounded by people that impact the world and to pass them in Target, go to church with them, and be influenced by them at close distance is just the most incredible blessing. What I like least about our city is probably the potholes on the highways. Haha.
It’s probably because we don’t have a state income tax (which is actually another thing I love about Tennessee) but it’s a huge inconvenience. I’ve even had one of my tires ripped apart by a pothole last winter!
