Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Graham.
Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My musical journey isn’t the typical one you would hear from other musicians in town, or at least that’s my opinion. Growing up, no one in my family was ever really into music besides my uncle. He dabbled in the bluegrass/gospel scene in local bands and churches but that’s about it.
It wasn’t until I was 18, fresh out of high school, which is where my story begins. I was about to start community college and needed a part-time job. It just so happened, that a restaurant owned by the Jonas family had opened in my hometown and they were looking for singing waitstaff. I had always liked to sing to myself driving down the road and in the shower but never in front of anyone.
By some crazy leap of faith and a whole lot of courage, I decided to audition, and little did I know that the audition was in front of the Jonas Brothers’ father. Talk about being nervous. Long story short, one thing led to another and I eventually started performing gigs around town. At the time, I didn’t even know how to play guitar but luckily my cousins who lived in Nashville gifted me an acoustic Epiphone guitar that I still have to this day.
Even though I was pretty horrible at first, I stuck with it and wrote my first song around the age of 21. I played local gigs for a couple of years and right before the pandemic, I was able to perform in my first writers’ round at Belcourt Taps in Nashville and that just fueled the fire even more.
I knew that this was what I wanted to pursue professionally. Flash forward a year and a half to the Summer of 2021 and I moved to Nashville and just released my debut single on April 8th!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve gotta be honest, there has been my own set of struggles but overall, it has come pretty easy and natural. The weird adjustment period when I moved here was definitely something I had to get used to but it was a good change!
I’ve met so many talented and incredible people who have become some of my best friends in the industry. It’s so funny because you kind of get your own little bubble of people that you can trust and be comfortable around and stick with them.
Although; competition here is pretty tough. There are so many talented people in this city so sometimes it can get overwhelming for sure.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My artistry is definitely something that I try to take as seriously as possible. Whenever I write songs, I try not to stick with the stuff that you hear on the radio. You know all of the stuff about beer and trucks. No offense to those guys because they are out there killing the game, and it works for them, I just don’t think it works for me.
Whenever I am in a write, I try to put some real-life behind the lyrics and somehow make it as relatable as possible to the audience. My single that’s out now actually comes to mind when I think of my artistry because I think it best represents me and what I want my music to sound like going forward.
Speaking of my new single, We Ain’t Gotta Do’, this is definitely something I am most proud of in my life right now. It’s all about being with that person who you don’t have to do anything with in order to still have a good time. I think even if you aren’t in a relationship you can still relate to it and I hope that is what is portrayed whenever people hear this song.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think being my truest self is the biggest quality that is most important to my success going forward.
I’m from a small town right outside of Charlotte, NC, and growing up there really made me thankful for all that I have back home. I definitely think moving away made me realize that so much more.
I try to be as transparent as possible on social media and other things like that so I hope it also translates to real life.
