Conversations with Alex Henderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Henderson .

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
Well, first things first, I’m a Nashville Native born and raised. I’ve always been an eccentric kid who would wear bird nests in my hair and wear crazy outfits/costumes regularly. I fell in love with jewelry and accessories in high school and participated in the O’more college summer studio program for jewelry design. I participated in that for three years and won a scholarship to the school. I like to sew but studying fashion made me realize that I want to do something more than sew clothing. I wanted to do something different and beyond normal fashion, so I decided I’d make wearable art pieces instead. I designed and created these insane medieval-inspired body art/jewelry pieces.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
Working with my materials, I constantly have pain in my hands, neck, back, etc. I’ve worn compression gloves because I work with pliers for hours, and my hands ache and swell from repetitive motion and stress from opening up chain links all day. However, watching the art come together to make a finished piece is rewarding. I haven’t had much inspiration for projects because it is hard to find the right market for them, so for now, they are mainly for my enjoyment. I want to keep working on my art and design until I drop, but without help, there isn’t a way for it to be sustainable unless I find a way to get my artwork out there for people to see.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in big wearable art pieces made from leather, chain, and metal. What sets me apart from others would be my designs’ outlandishness; they are more costume pieces, performance stage wear, and wearable art than clothing or jewelry. I’m most proud that I was able to design something so unique it grabs people’s attention and makes them want to learn more and keep looking.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I would love to connect with other designers and artists to make something amazing. There is so much talent here in this city. We just have to get connected. I’m also open to commissioning pieces. Feel free to contact me via email to start work on a new piece for your costume closet.
