Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Queen Chappin.
Hi Amy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I graduated from Lipscomb University in 1997 with an Arts degree and have been painting portraits and landscapes. I started painting weddings and musicians performing live around 2019. When Covid started I had some time to work on portrait commissions but was kept from doing the Plein air competitions and weddings. After a while, I began going downtown to find live performances and get out of the house.
It gave me good practice for wedding painting and generated sales. I was invited to paint the Charlotte Symphony and one Bluegrass performance from the stage. This put me under lots of pressure but allowed me to see better and generate some nice work. An opportunity to paint at the Ryman or the Opry would be awesome! This year I have focused mainly on music festivals, live radio shows, and painting downtown. I really enjoy my time on Broadway!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think with any artist it is hard to get into marketing. Finding your niche can take a long time and a lot of money. The idea is to improve your work and keep trying new things.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a live music painter, landscape/seascape Plein air painter, wedding painter live, and portrait artist. I am proud of my portraits of children and my live paintings.
I aim to capture the moment on stage when the musicians are at their best. Sometimes there is much detail and other times it is the feeling that the brushstrokes evoke of movement and music and a particular moment in time that makes the painting sing.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I remember always observing what was around me as a child. Once it snowed and we had a huge holly tree in the front yard. I was in awe of the birds in it and bundled up to lay in the snow under the tree to observe them. My mother painted too and I spent some time watching her. Observing God’s creation inspires me to be creative too.
